Debra Jane Heiberger

Debra Jane Heiberger, August 9, 1952 (Ramsey, Minn.) - February 24, 2010 (Scottsdale, Ariz.)

VP candidate for No Party (2000)

Running mate with nominee: Beatrice Elaine Johnson Mooney (1917-2008)
Popular vote: 7 (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign:

Beatrice Mooney was a nurse in Lake St. Croix Beach, Minn. who was known as something of a persistent perennial candidate running usually as an Independent Republican or Republican since the 1970s. Her main issues related to health, education, consumer protection, and recycling. At age 83 she was making her 5th bid for the White House.

She had filed with the FEC in 1980, 1988 and 1996 as a Republican for President and had run in some primaries. In 1984 and 2000 she apparently did not file with the FEC at all but was still in the running. She had also in the past run for Minnesota Governor several times, the US Senate and US Congress.

In 2000 Mooney became a registered write-in for President in Minnesota. Her running-mate was Debra Heiberger, a professional colleague who in her role as the head nurse at Hennepin County Medical Center had become a public advocate for the homeless.

The Mooney/Heiberger ticket earned seven popular votes in Minnesota. Since they were residents of the same state, there would have been a Constitutional problem in the event of their victory.

At the time of Heiberger's death in 2010 she was a RN at Indian Health Services and Maricopa County Jail in Arizona.
