The campaign:

Prior to the 2016 Presidential election, Jacob Seth Kern had run for the office of Mayor of Anchorage, Alaska three times, and in the US Senate primary as a Democrat in 2010.

If I am guessing with any accuracy, Kern's running-mate was his mother, Debra. Other son-mother tickets have included Daniel Steven Burkhardt/Georgia Loyce Burkhardt (Independent, 1996), Rick L. Rogers/Marilyn Jean Downs (Independent, 2012), and Johnson Immanuel Yuquimpo Li, Jr./Aida Nery Yuquimpo Li (Star Spangled Independent Party, 2016).

Much of Kern's online presence in the 2016 campaign has been deleted, but a Q&A during his 2015 mayoral campaign conducted by The Northern Light is still available, giving us some insight on his platform--

“Democrat.”

“I’ve ran for city mayor since, I’ve got six, six, six, six, seven, seven, eight, nine, seven, seven, seven, seven, seven, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 15 about nine years of political experience campaigning. About 10 years of campaigning experience.”

What goals would you have if you became mayor?

“I would make my machines to give money back to the city.”

How do you plan on helping UAA?

“Giving you money, giving you money for my machines and doing anything you say by the popular vote.”

What machine are you talking about?

“Electricity machines, spaceships and cars. Just different electronic devices that I would come up with.”

Why are you running for mayor?

“To make my machines and give money back to the city and the residents.”

What are the top three issues you’d like to address while mayor?

“Just giving you money, that’s it, main priority, millions and billions and trillions of dollars to do by ballot and just popular vote and petitions, just mass signatures.”

The Kerns were registered as write-ins in the State of Alaska. Since both were residents of the same state there would have been a potential Constitutional issue of them assuming office in the event of their victory.

The campaign:

Johnson Immanuel Yuquimpo Li, Jr. of Federal Way, Wash. [Washington State trivia alert!!!] filed with the FEC late in the game, on Sept. 10, 2016. Under the name of the Star Spangled Banner Independent Party he was a registered write-in in three states, each with a different running-mate. In Alaska: Johnson Y. Li-- Minnesota: Aida Yuquimpo Li-- and in Washington: Daniel Dalison. All three VP nominees appeared to be relatives, but in what capacity was never spelled out although Aida seems to have been the mother of the Presidential candidate.

It looks as if Li was born in Manila, Philippines. In 2016 his VPs appeared to all be residents of Washington State.

If I am guessing with any accuracy, Li's running-mate in Minnesota was his mother, Aida. Other son-mother tickets have included Daniel Steven Burkhardt/Georgia Loyce Burkhardt (Independent, 1996), Rick L. Rogers/Marilyn Jean Downs (Independent, 2012), and Jacob Seth Kern/Debra Kay Kern (Non Affiliated, 2016).

Much of Li's online record of his 2016 campaign has vanished. Li ran for President in 2020 as well under the name Johnson Immanuel Lee Jr. and received a single write-in vote in Maryland. He also used the name Johnson Immanuel Siddhartha Lee Jr. on an additional Facebook page (although he also called J.I.S. Lee Jr. his "twin brother," confusing the issue and making me second guess my findings). He appointed Barbra Streisand as his VP in that election.

Some of J.I.S. Lee Jr.'s Facebook posts provides an idea of his political platform, although the reader might frequently have some questions regarding the backstories. Some of his allegations get pretty raw, here are samples of the milder ones--

Tony Mabesa (1935-2019) was a well known Filipino director and actor.

I hear so many people complaining about President Obama and the Democrats and about the Republicans. Yet, none of you will help me stop their corruption and incompetence.
If you are one of the complainers, guess what! You deserve whatever pain they cause you because you refuse to take action.
We go from one party in control to the other over and over again. They never solve our problems and spend all our money and bankrupt us doing it. Then they create new problems that they won't fix.
Yet, you do nothing except complain. You fall for their lies again and again.
You no longer deserve to complain because I gave you a chance and you rejected it.

Read it and weep!
Here are my latest Electoral Vote assessments. The national popular vote polls mean absolutely nothing.
October 14th:  President Obama 288 and Governor Romney 250. (includes a 3% bias toward Governor Romney)
October 19th:  President Obama 277 and Governor Romney 248. (CO & NH too close to call)
October 26th:  (1) President Obama 277 and Governor Romney 252. (CO too close to call)
(2) President Obama 277 and Governor Romney 235 (CO, VA and NH too close to call)
October 30th:  President Obama 281 and Governor Romney 235. (CO & VA too close to call)
Like I’ve been saying all along, President Obama is projected to win (every time since August). Governor Romney tightened the race but is fading just like I predicted due to several expected factors that will benefit President Obama in the last week or so before the election which include:
• A slight improvement in the economy (in spite of President Obama’s policies, not because of them)
• Opportunities for President Obama to play President in the media (i.e. Hurricane Sandy)
• Continued lies by President Obama and Democrats everywhere (either unchallenged or portrayed by the media as truth)
• A secret tactic (still unused, but likely)
I gave America a chance to stop President Obama and to elect a truly non-partisan President for the first time in over 200 years. The media and voters refused to listen.
I can only hope that what myself and others have done so far and will continue to do will help sway enough Electoral Votes from President Obama to Governor Romney to do what Governor Romney can’t do on his own, stop President Obama from winning.

Barring a billionaire suitor stepping in today to fund my campaign, I must suspend my campaign.
I urge everyone to vote for Governor Romney because President Obama, in a second term will issue hundreds of illegal executive orders to:
• transfer wealth and power from you to his coalition.
• transform our Democratic-Republic into a Socialist-Democracy.
• eliminate rights.
• subordinate our Constitution and laws to international organizations and laws.
• weaken our military and our ability to defend ourselves.
• collapse our economy.
• many more harmful actions.
I want to thank the few that contributed in some way to my campaign. At least they know they won’t be to blame for allowing President Obama to destroy our Republic.
Good luck to all that tried to fight the transformation, you’re going to need it. Please pass on to the generations that follow, what America was. Perhaps one day, we’ll get her back.

I launched my campaign six weeks before the election because that's the earliest I could start. I knew I'd have to catch lightning in a bottle but I also knew that in America with today's technology it could happen.
Ok so it didn't happen.
However, I'm willing to see this through until 2016 and save America then.
If President Obama wins reelection it will be vastly more difficult, but we can still do it.
With your help, just a little from each of you we can win in 2016.

I'm working on my plan to recover from the $20T+ deficit President Obama will leave me when I take over in 2017.

Rogers' VP Marilyn Downs appeared to have been his own mother. There was at least one previous ticket in US history with a son as the Presidential nominee and the mother as VP: Daniel Steven Burkhardt/Georgia Loyce Burkhardt (Independent, 1996).

The Rogers/Downs ticket were registered as write-ins in at least 7 states. Only West Virginia reported a solitary vote for them. Although Rogers' marketing proclaimed "Rick Rogers for President of the United States of America 2012 (2016?) Independent - Non-Partisan - Constitutionalist - Veteran - Family Man - Honest - Smart - Determined" it does not appear he ran again in 2016 but instead supported Sen. Ted Cruz in the primaries--

He is the one to force the federal government to follow our Constitution. Trump is a play both sides of the fence guy. One who will abandon the rule of law to cut a deal, a bad deal for America. The corrupt, incompetent, RINO, establishment GOP infestation is at all levels of government. Proving their incompetence is their unwise support of Jeb Bush and now Marco Rubio. It is pushing the undisciplined, reckless Trump into office. A guy who will make deals and compromise with democrats just to say he made a deal. No deal is better than a bad deal. With a bad deal we are stuck with it. If no deal is reached we can try again for a better one and eventually we all end up much better off. The bad deal never solves the problem and costs ten times as much. Listen up GOP, Rubio won't edge out Trump. The Trump voters are those fed up with YOU! But they don't grasp what our country really needs. The smart voters know that the next President, above all else must do what his job is... faithfully execute the Office of President and preserve, protect and defend our Constitution. Trump won't do that. He'll be all over the board acting like the childish blowhard he is. Worse, he's such a high-negative person/candidate he very well may blow the general election and lose to a totally unworthy democrat that in no way should win otherwise.

Allen Ray Farnham

Running mate with nominee: Barbara Ann Marie Prokopich (b. 1943)

The campaign:

Barb Prokopich of (Washington State trivia alert!!!) Elk, Wash. in Spokane County ran for US President in 2012 as a registered write-in in nine states apparently feeling that the Republican Party was not conservative enough. On Nov. 1, 2012 the Spokesman-Review reported she "doesn't agree with Romney's policies although she would've picked Paul Ryan as a running mate." Ryan was already called for but as it turns out she had at least three VP choices on record-- Allen R. "Al" Farnham, Rick Santorum, and Scott Brown.

Al Farnum appears to be Prokopich's son, who lived in nearby Chattaroy, Wash. In 1992 the Looking Back Party ran Isabell Masters with Walter Ray Master, which I believe is the first mother-son ticket. 1996 saw Daniel Steven Burkhardt, an Independent, with his mother Georgia Loyce Burkhardt as the VP, the first son-mother ticket that I can ascertain. The family relationship between Prokopich and Farnham would not be an issue with the Constitution, but the fact they were residents of the same state would certainly have been an obstacle.

Prokopich told a reporter, "I can do a whole lot better. We don't have to have the same kind of game rules, we don't have to be run by the government and we can be run together, as a family and a team. An American team," and added, "If a poor person can learn to spend with less, then why can't the top of the brass do the same?"

One of the problems with researching a political campaign that took place in Century 21 is if the candidate used social media like Twitter, Youtube, and Facebook, and then deleted most everything after the election as Prokopich appears to have done, that information vanishes forever. Future historians are going to find it quite maddening when they try to make sense of our era.

Prokopich received 41 recorded write-in votes total. Vice Presidents were not reported in Idaho, Illinois (4 votes), Maryland (2 votes), Washington, and West Virginia. We know she intended Brown to be her running mate in Maryland but cannot guess who would be in the others. Farnham was the VP in Alaska, Kentucky, and Montana, with zero votes reported for all three. Santorum was the VP in Minnesota with 35 votes, her best result in any state.

Georgia Loyce Burkhardt

Georgia Loyce Burkhardt, January 16, 1932 (North Carolina) - December 10, 1998 (Bedford, Ohio)

VP candidate for Independent (1996)

Running mate with nominee: Daniel Steven Burkhardt (1961-2004)

The campaign:

Dan S. Burkhardt and Georgia L. Burkhardt were certified write-in candidates in the state of Ohio, where they lived in the city of Macedonia.

Prior to running for President, Dan Burkhardt had run for Mayor and later City Council in Macedonia, and in 1994 as a write-in for the US Senate. Apparently all of those campaigns ended in defeat.

If I am correctly connecting the dots here, this was a son-mother ticket. Letters to the editor in other years suggest they were a bit Left of center but I could not locate any coverage of their 1996 campaign. The father and husband, Thomas Edward Burkhardt, lived from 1930 to 1980.

In 1992 the Looking Back Party ran Isabell Masters with Walter Ray Master, which I believe is the first mother-son ticket. The Burkhardts were, as far as I can ascertain, the first son-mother ticket.

The first son-father ticket I can locate is William James Barton with dad James William Barton as his running-mate for the Independent Party of America in 1980. The earliest example of a father-son ticket I can find is Jack Richard Moore with his son Jay Richard Moore for VP in the Common Man's Party (1988, 1992). Larry Brant Sargeant had his brother Perry David Sargeant as the VP for the American Freedom Party (1976). William Gahres' brother-in-law, Joseph F. Loughlin, had the second spot for the Down With Lawyers Party (1980). Frank Taylor of the United American Party (1976) had his wife's uncle Henry Albert Swan as a running-mate. Eugene Arthur Hem asked his sister Joanne C. Roland, to be his VP for the Third Party (1992). Isabell Masters ran with her son Walter as VP in 1992 in a mother-son for the Looking Back Party. In 1996 and 2000 she ran with her daughters as VP.

I'm sure there are many other family ticket combinations I am missing.  

On Election Day the Burkhardt/Burkhardt ticket finished with 11 popular votes. In the event they had won the election there would have been a Constitutional problem since they were residents of the same state.
