Danny Zelaya

Danny Zelaya, April 13, 1981 -

VP candidate for Independent (2016, 2020)

Running mate with nominee (2016, 2020): Jesus (Spirit) (ca. 4 BC–ca. AD 30/33 / spirit form: ca. AD 30/33- present)
Popular vote (2016, 2020): 0 (0.00%)
Electoral vote (2016, 2020): 0/538

The campaign (2016):

The Spirit of Jesus has appeared in Presidential campaigns before. He ran for President in 2008 with VP Christopher Michael Padgett as an Independent. He was also a third party VP at least three times: 1972 with Billy Joe Clegg (Loyal USA Party), 1988 with Basil Tellou (Independent) and 2008 with Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian (Independent). In 2016 and 2020 he ran again as a Presidential candidate with VP Danny Zelaya.

On Nov. 25, 2015 Zelaya of Miami, Fla. made the following statement on Facebook regarding his Presidential campaign--

So my dad told me I should explain on facebook what my plans are should I become President The Politically Correct thing to say is strengthen our economy reduce crime balance our budget and expand our global war on terrorism But The Real Plan cannot be discussed because the opposition will win based on the fact that most Americans believe what they are told in the media and the media is run by individuals who don't want to advance America because they thrive on bad news They would have nothing to talk about if everything was going well but that's what we all want If we are going to do this we are going to get organized and realize we are fighting an enemy here at home and it is called fame and greed Let me expand everything you hear is true the plan it to keep it just that people giving there opinions on social media and nothing more they don't want you to know the truth I am here to liberate this country from the oppressive machine that has been holding it hostage since it's inception wether I achieve that or not I will at least be able to open the mind of a few individuals to get the ball rolling in the right direction Nobody wanted me to run for President I am everyone's nightmare and there only hope is that my opinions never get the light of day and the truth is never exposed this puts my life at risk so be it for the good of the people My only hope is to advance the Kingdom of God That is the Only Thing That will last All These Other Kingdom's Will Be Crushed By This One With Good Reason

He filed with the FEC as an Independent on Jan. 28, 2016.

Zelaya later shifted his focus to running for Vice President, with Jesus as the standard bearer--

Aug. 6, 2016
Only one guy worthy of being the president it's me and if Jesus were here vice president

Oct. 17, 2016
vice-president is enough for me I'm following Jesus' lead to the glory of god

No votes were reported for the ticket.

The campaign (2020):

On July 3, 2020 Danny Zelaya of announced on Facebook he was running for President again.

However, he had also started a Danny Zelaya for Vice President Facebook page in Apr. 2020. Perhaps I am in error but it seems a safe assumption that Jesus is once again the Presidential half of that ticket.

Zelaya's 2020 campaign was almost invisible compared to his 2016 effort.

Election history:
2016 - US President (Independent) - defeated
2020 - US President (Independent) - defeated

Other occupations: athlete

Notes:
Zelaya's father immigrated from Honduras.

Christopher Michael Padgett

Christopher Michael Padgett, January 27, 1970 -

VP candidate for Independent (2008)

Running mate with nominee: Jesus (Spirit) (ca. 4 BC–ca. AD 30/33 / spirit form: ca. AD 30/33- present)
Popular vote: ? (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign:

In 2008 Chris Padgett offered himself as the ideal Vice-Presidential candidate on a ticket with Jesus as a method of light-heated evangelism. Some samples from Padgett's campaign video--

-What are my credentials? What is my experience? I'll give you experience. Eight kids! If that doesn't give me experience to run a country I don't know what will.
-With my good looks and His divinity, and humanity, and perfection, I think we have a lot to offer. Don't you?
-I want to say that the time is now. Now! For you to make a difference. Get off your feet. Get on your feet, I mean.
-Jesus, dynamically delicious.

Actually, in 2008 a book entitled Jesus for President was a best seller (by Shane Claiborne and Chris Haw) and the authors' tour resembled a political campaign. The authors renewed the idea in 2012 as well. Also in 2008 Jesus was the running-mate in the Presidential campaign of Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian.

Chris and Linda Padgett converted as a couple to Catholicism in 1999 and the faith became the central core of their lives. They developed their own nonprofit ministry called Catholic Family and Marriage, Inc.

The husband and wife team of Chris and Linda Padgett ran on an Independent ticket in 2012, producing a video with the Presidential candidate advocating with mock seriousness such promises as--

--Increase things,
--Fight pirates.
--Free cheese (for the poor)
--Free health care (including pets)
--P90X required.
--Golf must be a sport in (in China)
--No plastic dolls.

In 2012 Padgett explained his electoral history with deadpan humor and a straight face--

"Here's the thing. Four years ago I ran as Jesus' running-mate and I meant it. And Jesus and I, we've have many conversations since then, but apparently the United States of America was not so interested in having Jesus as President. We had somebody else as President. Things have not been going so great. There have been jobs that are lacking and gas prices are way too high, milk costs a lot of money and people don't get to go on vacations and stuff. And so I thought I would ask Jesus if it was OK if I ran for President this year and he said that I could. And so I am."

Shortly after the 2012 election the Padgetts began a homesteading lifestyle near Syracuse, NY.

Chris Padgett also launched a Youtube campaign for President in 2016, but without mention of a running-mate.

Election history:
2012 - US President (Independent) - defeated
2016 - US President (Independent) - defeated

Other occupations: Catholic Family and Marriage Inc., homesteader, speaker, musician, author

Notes:
Since 2008 the Padgetts had another child.

Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev

Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, March 2, 1931 (Privolnoye, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union) -

VP candidate for Independent (2016)

Running mate with nominee: Ronald Wilson Reagan (Spirit) (physical body: 1911-2004 / spirit form, 2004- )
Popular vote: ? (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign:

In an election crowded with unusual candidates, one of the more intriguing figures in the 2016 race was "Mr. Ronald Reagan's Ghost," who actually filed with the FEC as an Independent based in Rochester, Minn. It wasn't the first time Reagan for office after his death in 2004. The Zombie Ronald Reagan was the VP in Cobra Commander's 2008 Presidential campaign.

Other spirit candidates on national tickets have included: George Washington as VP for Ellen Linea Wahlquist Jensen (1952, Washington Peace Party), Jesus as VP for Billy Joe Clegg (1972, Loyal USA Party) and as VP for Basil Tellou (1988, Independent) and yet again as VP for Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian (2008, Independent), Richard Milhous Nixon as VP for Betty White (2012, Independent), and the double spirit team consisting of the reincarnations of Abraham Lincoln and George Brinton McClellan (2012, Mythical Majestic Midgardian Party).

The Reagan Ghost campaign mostly consisted of a few Facebook posts in 2015, but they did contain some valuable nuggets of information. Some samples--

Aug. 21, 2015
I'm back Buckeroos! I, Ronald Reagan's Ghost am running for President of The United States again in 2016!!! Since I am a ghost, I will be able to work 24 hours per day, 7 days per week because ghosts do not require sleep. It's been awhile since I was President. My positions on various issues have changed since I was previously on Earth. In the afterlife, I've been able to consult with various people, including Jesus, Ghandi and Jimi Hendricks. My views on many things have changed during these years in the afterlife. I will come out with my Presidential platform in the coming weeks.

Aug. 21, 2015
Over the next 444 days until the 2016 election, I plan on outlining my positions on various issues. Here is my first official position statement:
1) I am against the man-bun hairstyle. Under my reign as Supreme Leader, uh, I mean President; any man wearing his hair in a bun will be forced to live in a tent-city outside of the Governor's Mansion in Wisconsin. While living there, they can freely play hacky-sack, juggle, play bongos and basically annoy Wisconsin's douche-baggy Governor Scott Walker.

Aug. 24, 2015
Here is my official Federal Elections Commission filing for President again. I'm candidate 583.
It was a busy weekend for me. I met up with Jesus for drinks and to talk political strategy. Thus far, he's sort of taken it upon himself to act as my Political Consultant in the after-life. I could use someone down on the ground though as Jesus is not ready to return yet. PS... Jesus wanted me to tell you that he is not a fan of the GOP. I'll be running my campaign on sort of "What Would Jesus Do" platform. He has run some great ideas by me as we hit up some popular watering holes in Heaven.
He's not a big fan of churches and cults getting tax-exempt status in the US. Therefore, when I am President, churches/cults will have tax-exempt status revoked. That money will be used to set up or fully fund existing non-profit organizations to help needy people ...

Aug. 25, 2015
I've met the mother of Donald Trump in the afterlife. She is, in fact an orange orangutang. She says Donald is acting like an ape.

On Aug. 24, 2015 the campaign Facebook account ran a graphic that simply declared "Reagan/Gorbachev," strongly implying that the former Soviet leader was the running-mate. Or at least that's my inference and I'm running with it since the possibility of this ticket is too good not to cover and makes a good story. At the time Mr. Ronald Reagan's Ghost was running for President, Gorbachev was basically in the political wilderness of Putin's Russia.

The Reagan/Gorbachev electioneering appeared to be a rather short-lived effort. No votes were reported for the ticket on Election Day. Naturally there would have been a number of Constitutional hurdles they would have had to overcome in the event of their victory such as term limits, citizenship, and the fact the nominee was deceased.

Election history:
1969-1970 - Deputy, Verkhovnyy Sovet Soyuza Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik (Kommunisticheskaya partiya Sovetskovo Soyuza)
1989-1990 - Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union (Kommunisticheskaya partiya Sovetskovo Soyuza)
1990-1991 - Prezident Sovetskogo Soyuza (Kommunisticheskaya partiya Sovetskovo Soyuza)
1996 - President of Russia (Independent) - defeated

Other occupations: combine operator, attorney, First Party Secretary of the Stavropol Regional Committee, First Secretary of the Stavropol City Party Organization, Second Secretary of the Stavropol Kraikom, First Secretary of the Stavropol kraikom, Secretary of the Central Committee, member of Politbyuro TsK KPSS, General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Chairman of the Presidum of the Supreme Soviet, author, lecturer,

Other married couples who ran as a ticket include Marvin Edward Perkins/Dorothy Louise Perkins - Independent (1980), Henry R. King/Sandra M. King - Independent (1984, 1988, 1992), David C. Byrne/Karen Byrne - Common Citizens of the United States of America (2000), Stanford Eugene Andress/Irene Altahelle Markley Deasy - Unaffiliated (2004), Debra Joyce Renderos/Oscar Renderos Castillo - Independent (2004), Oscar R. Renderos/Debra Joyce Renderos - Independent (2008), Debra Joyce Renderos/Oscar R. Renderos - Independent (2008)

In the event of their victory there would have been a problem with the Constitution since the Padgetts were residents of the same state.

Shortly after the 2012 election they began a homesteading lifestyle near Syracuse, NY.

Chris Padgett also launched a Youtube campaign for President in 2016, but without mention of a running-mate.

God

God

VP candidate for Independent (2008, 2016, 2020)

Running mate with nominee (2008, 2016, 2020): Andre Frank Ventura (b. 1971)
Popular vote (2008): ? (0.00%)
Popular vote (2016): ? (0.00%)
Popular vote (2020): ? (0.00%)
Electoral vote (2008, 2016, 2020): 0/538

The campaign (2008):

There have been plenty of Presidential candidates who claim they were called by God to run for office. And some have gone so far to say God was their campaign manager. A few even claim they are, in fact, God. Billy Joe Clegg (1972), Basil Tellou (1988), and Mrs. Betty Bowers America's Best Christian (2008) had the Spirit of Jesus as their VP. But it wasn't until Andre F. Ventura that God was actually placed on the ticket as the Vice-Presidential nominee.

On Aug. 4, 2008, Ventura made a notarized statement of his intention to run for President. His running-mate was given as--

Name: God
Address: Omni Present
Phone: Prayer

The Ventura/God effort did not appear on any ballots or had registered as write-in candidates. In the event of their victory God's presence on the ticket might have posed an interesting legal problem since the Supreme Being was not born in the United States and is not a citizen.

The campaign (2016):

On Apr. 24, 2014, Ventura made a notarized statement of his intention to run for President. His running-mate was given as--

Name: God
Address: Omni Present
Phone: Prayer

In 2012 Ventura gained some press concerning his placement of thought-provoking signs in his Detroit neighborhood pointing out how dangerous it had become as he became increasingly involved with community activism. Also during that year he served some jail time for failing to pay child support. This busy time might explain why he skipped the 2012 election.

The Ventura/God effort did not appear on any ballots or had registered as write-in candidates.

The campaign (2020):

On Sept. 5, 2018, Ventura made a notarized statement of his intention to run for President. His running-mate was given as--

Name: God
Address: Omni Present
Phone: Prayer

In a subsequent letter to the FEC regarding some kind of bureaucratic complication, Ventura included--

Under the commissions requirements; I filed a manual form containing the required information, to which my running mate listed as God by whom I was drafted to represent as a living man. All additional information concerning party affiliation can be directed to him, or should already be held as a matter of record by the federal representation of my running mate on all monetary instruments, at all levels of the judiciary system, and all commissions representing the sovereignty of the republic of the United States of America to which these filings are a reaffirmation to my original oath of office as a military representative in December 1992.

... Please note that the Affidavit which was served is to remain in good standing, further inquires can be obtained from my running mate, through the information contained on the affidavit; or your fellow constituents who affirmed their commission should be able to meet, since he is represented in every cash transgression. Also considering he has been known as Yah way; and goes by aliases such as: Buddha, Jehovah, Mohammed, Allah to name some all while being the Alpha and Omega. Furthermore, my affiliation to God has been placed on docket numerous times both in the 36th district court of Detroit, and the 43rd district court of Hazel Park without question or objection.

... If you need any further clarification In these matters, please refer future Issues to my representation, and council In fact: God, all contractual Information can be obtained In the King James version of the Holy Bible, and numerous various sources. Due to the fact that I have been extremely busy tending to the safety and wellbeing of children, and an ongoing crackhead Infestation that Is engulfing my community without resolve?

The Ventura/God effort did not appear on any ballots or had registered as write-in candidates.

Election history: none.

Marion Gordon Robertson

Marion Gordon Robertson, March 22, 1930 (Lexington, Va.) -

VP candidate for Loyal USA Party (1992)

Running mate with nominee: Billy Joe Clegg (1928-1997)
Popular vote: ? (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign:

After running in the New Hampshire primary and failing to win the Republican or Democratic elections, perennial candidate Billy Joe Clegg once again lifted the Loyal USA Party flag and ran as a write-in. "People are dissatisfied with the caliber of candidates running for President because they are politicians and not statesmen," he said. "People are voting for something else, and I am something else. By not being polluted by politics, we are saying no to foreign aid, abortion, and defense spending."

Clegg promised to cut foreign aid and redirect the funds to education, "I would put a computer in every classroom in America. Instead if sending billions of dollars to Russia we can put that money into the classrooms to help educate children."

He had a plan for the war in drugs. "We should not eliminate our National Guard," he proposed, "and should strengthen our drug prevention program by using the military."

On taxation, he said, "The first thing I'd do would be to eliminate the IRS by executive order. We don't need it and it's unpatriotic."

Clegg promised he would appoint Vice-President Dan Quayle to be Ambassador to the United Nations. He had kind of a thing about Quayle, even to the point of being President of the Quit Quayle Bashing Club.

As for his campaign staff, Clegg explained "I am represented by God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is my campaign manager." When Clegg had run for President in 1972, the Spirit of Jesus was identified as his running-mate, but 20 years later the candidate expressed his desire to name another Heavenly entity to the role of VP-- the televangelist Rev. Marion Gordon "Pat" Robertson. Needless to say, if Robertson had a reaction to this honor I was unable to find it.

As Fate would have it, I am writing this profile on March 22, 2020, Robertson's 90th birthday!

As if Robertson was not already well known to a large segment of Americans, he became a household name to the mainstream when he ran for President in the Republican primaries in 1988, pushing the Party further to the evangelical Right. I believe here in my home state of Washington he received a large chunk of delegates and the Establishment Republican Party here has never fully recovered since then.

Like many other extreme media talking heads and political demagogues, Robertson has learned the trick that the more outrageous, hateful, insane and controversial your statements are, the more attention you'll get-- and this has made him a very wealthy man. So he doesn't need any more coverage from me on this point.

But I do have a Pat Robertson story that should bring a smile--

At some point in the 1990s I discovered Robertson's father was the Senator Absalom Willis Robertson (1887-1971) (D-VA). The earliest known Willis ancestor we know in my family was named Absalom Willis. My guy was born during the Revolution and lived in Virginia. He vanished shortly after 1840, walking into the SW Virginia woods in a fit of anger and was never seen again.

We don't know exactly where my guy was born and raised, who his parents were, exact birth or death date, or even his true first name since he was also known as Abner Willis. But Absalom is such a weird and bizarre choice for a name that I just had to see if perhaps Rev. Robertson was a relative and had more information. We knew we were a distant cousin to Thomas Jefferson with a shared immigrant ancestor at Jamestown, so maybe Robertson was another famous Virginia relative?

So I wrote to him, making it clear I had no interest in his religious or political endeavors, just the genealogy. As you have by now no doubt surmised, I pretty much don't agree with Robertson on much of anything. Shortly after that I was rewarded with a barrage of 700 Club junk mail which I found quite disheartening.

Then to my surprise and delight I received a nice personal letter from Robertson. He didn't really have any data to share that was useful but I did appreciate his gracious response.

I thought the matter was closed but then a short time later I had a phone call (this was in the landline days). A Southern Belle asked for me by name and when I affirmed she requested that I stay on the line for a personal message from Pat Robertson. Boy, was I excited! I bet he asked around and found something perhaps scrawled in a family Bible!

But nooooo. It was recorded message in Pat's pleading voice saying something like, "My friends, the End Times are almost here. We need your financial support more than ever ..." I didn't hear the rest, instead just quietly hung up the phone laughing at myself for being suckered.

My Willis family has a very strong outlaw element and criminal history. So when all this conjectured blood connection to Robertson was still hanging in the air, the news covered some of kind of alleged Robertson con job where money supposedly raised to help Third World people was actually used to finance some for-profit private enterprise. When that was broadcast we looked at each other and said, "Wow! That settles it. He IS one of us!"

Ever since then we have called him "Cousin Pat."

Jesus (Spirit)

Jesus (Spirit), physical body: ca. 4 BC (Judea, Roman Empire) – ca AD 30/33 (Judea, Roman Empire) / spirit form: ca AD 30/33 - present

VP candidate for Loyal USA Party (1972)
VP candidate for Independent (1988)
VP candidate for Independent (2008)

Running mate with nominee (1972): Billy Joe Clegg (1928-1997)
Running mate with nominee (1988): Basil Tellou (1922-2009)
Running mate with nominee (2008): Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian (b. 1975)
Popular vote (1972, 1988, 2008): 0 (0.00%)
Electoral vote (1972, 1988, 2008): 0/538

The campaign (1972)

Billy Joe Clegg, a registered Democrat in Oklahoma, announced he was running for President on Nov. 12, 1970. Recently retired from the Air Force he had found religion and declared that his oath of office on Inauguration Day would consist only of the Lord's Prayer. He told the press that his anger over removing prayer from public schools was the spark that ignited his run for office. Other times he said God directed him to campaign for President.

Although he immediately formed his own political organization, the Loyal USA Party, Clegg initially ran in the Democratic primaries to the point of visiting New Hampshire. In the fall of 1971 he said US Sen. Henry "Scoop" Jackson (D-Wash.) would be a fine running mate. Later it was announced Clegg had drafted Rev. Billy Graham to be the VP on the Loyal USA Party ticket. But Jackson and Graham apparently had other plans.

Clegg called Jesus his campaign manager, but the Savior was elevated to the official running mate position at the start of Sept. 1972 when Clegg announced "The Spirit of Jesus Christ" was going to be his VP. It wasn't clear if he meant this literally or metaphorically. Around the same time Clegg also said, "I'm a five-star general in God's Army-- self-appointed."

Frequently strapped for cash, the candidate toured the country by bus or hitchhiking. Clegg's request to have Secret Service protection during the course of the campaign somehow fell on deaf ears if you can imagine that.

Many politicians and political movements both Left and Right have declared God to be on their side, but Clegg actually said God was on his campaign staff as well and, hey, what other candidate but Clegg had the Spirit of Jesus was his running mate in 1972?

Running a strictly write-in campaign, Clegg's popular vote total on Election Day is unknown. He later ran for President in 1976, 1988, 1992, 1996 and had announced he was running in 2000 just a few months before his death in 1997. Some sources claim he also ran for President in 1980 and 1984 but if that is so they must have been stealth campaigns. His pattern was the same each time. He would first attempt to win the Democratic or Republican primaries and then failing that would move on to a third party bid. 1972 was the only election where he declared the Spirit of Jesus to be his VP.

The campaign (1988):

Basil Tellou was retired, but during his career he was a character actor in Hollywood films, and simply just a character as a non-actor in general. In 1988 he was living in a Pasadena house trailer and listed his occupation as poet and mystic. "Purity and immortality are the themes of my campaign-- clean air, no drugs, no gangs, no rock 'n' roll."

Tellou had created his own religion called Tellosophy and assigned himself the title of "Bishop." Since he possessed "the knowledge of ultimate reality" of course this qualified him to be President.

But becoming President was only the beginning. He was hoping to be proclaimed America's philosopher-king. "Democracy and communism are both enemies of the individual," he said. "The only political safeguard for an individual is an aristocracy, an aristocracy not necessarily composed of persons of title or pedigree but rather of persons who are exceptionally gifted-- the intelligentsia, mystics, artists, poets, writers."

As President-King, Tellou would provide unlimited to scientific research as long as animals were not harmed. Cryogenics and cities in space were two projects he wanted to explore.

Some Tellou quotes from the campaign:

My system is to bring food, shelter and medical care to everybody to get them out from under the yoke of having to work. You've got to give them a chance to develop. You've got to give them time to read, instead of going to work, watching television and going to bed. That's a robotized life.

I want to awaken them to the fury of truth. I want to be an alarm clock-- Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Time to wake up, man, and see what's happening to the country! ... I don't bring the false peace that keeps you asleep. I bring you the fury that awakens your soul.

I will eliminate crime by not allowing anyone on a sub-human level to have children ... If sub-human people can't have children, no crime. That's where you get your crime, from the sub-human kids of the sub-human parents.
[When asked to define the sub-human people] That will be determined by spiritual men with special powers to know. It's beyond average intellectuality, you wouldn't understand it.

We were never meant to die.

Get the preservatives out of bread!

Once I pass by, I never return.

I never explain what I mean. Let the people wonder, "What does he mean? What does he mean?" A good ending, right?

To a reporter: Be sure to mention that I've been celibate for 25 years.

He also wanted Raymond Burr to be his campaign manager. In a 1953 television production entitled The Triumphant Hour, Burr played St. Peter and Tellou had the role of Jesus. Take note of that as the story continues.

Tellou had asked Rose Bird to be his running-mate, "I wrote her a letter and she sent me a nice picture." In 1988 she was still pretty well known, especially to those of us on the West Coast. Bird had been removed as the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court by the voters in a Nov. 1986 election due to her liberal interpretations of the law and alleged administrative mismanagement.

When Bird failed to provide a definite answer, Tellou wrote to Jackie Onassis but, incredibly, he did not receive a reply. "For awhile I considered asking Jessica Hahn," he said late in the campaign. Hahn was a celebrity in 1988 and known for blowing the whistle on the sexual escapades of televangelist Jim Bakker.

"Then it came to me one night," Tellou told a reporter. "I jumped out of bed. Why not Jesus?" In clarifying his VP choice to the journalist he added, "That's Jesus in spirit. Be sure you add that or people will think I'm batty because Jesus ain't here, you understand?"

Running as a write-in candidate, the Tellou/Jesus ticket's popular votes have not been reported.

The campaign (2008):

Canadian-American comedian and satirist Deven Green, in her persona as Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, released a video for the 2008 campaign declaring her run for President with Jesus as her running mate. Her take on the matter was a bit different than Mr. Clegg's.

In explaining why she assumed the role of Presidential candidate while Jesus was "the invisible running mate," Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian said, "As I explained, with laborious patience, I don't play second banana to anyone, especially a Jew with a criminal record."
