The campaign:

In Martha Bolton's work of political fantasy fiction Josiah for President (Zondervan, 2012) US Congressman Mark Stedman of Wisconsin fails in his quest to gain the Presidential nomination and on his road trip home from DC has a fateful accidental meeting in Lancaster County, Penn. with Josiah Stoltzfus, an Amish farmer. So impressed is Stedman with Stoltzfus' character, he runs Josiah as an independent write-in candidate for President. In turn the candidate insists that Stedman be the running-mate.

I'll try to not spoil the story too much, but Josiah does indeed win the election as a write-in. The book mentions that among the states he won were Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Tennessee, North Carolina, Iowa, Indiana, Texas, Arizona, Michigan, Illinois, and New York.

The fictitious campaign actually became real in the 2012 cycle. Zondervan released a couple Josiah for President electioneering videos with actors portraying Stoltzfus and Stedman. A Facebook page was set up. The novel was also presented on stage as a musical.

Four years earlier in the 2008 election there was a ticket with an Amish connection. The Florida-based Real Food Party of the United States of America ran farmers James Harlin Carter and Dennis Eugene Stoltzfoos as the President and VP. Raised in Lancaster County, Penn. as an Amish Mennonite, Stoltzfoos went out on his own both spiritually and physically, moving to Florida in 1989. After working in the alternative health field and an EMT for a time he eventually started his own farm. Citing the writings of Weston Price as a major influence, Stoltzfoos shared Carter's enthusiasm for non-pasteurized dairy and natural foods.

The campaign:

James Harlin Carter, aka "Jimmy," "Goatroper," and "Peanut," declared his intent to run for US President in Sept. 2007 under the banner of the Real Food Party of the United States of America. An optician in Live Oak, Fla., Carter was also a farmer with a strong interest in nutrition. His main reason for running, he said, was "First to Promote raw milk and make it easily available to all that want it. So many of our laws + restrictions are based on an opinions + fears instead of facts. For this reason, I want to educate the public to these falsehoods and try to correct them." Accordingly, his campaign was operated by the Udder Jimmy Carter for President Committee.

"The Real Food Party," Carter explained, "seeks to revise existing regulations to allow the sale of non-pasteurized milk and other 'food that is helpful.'" Beyond  wanting to "change the way Americans eat," Carter's other platform planks included:

(1) Give back the personal freedoms (Freedom of choice for one) that have been taken away by the government and its corrupted organizations.
(2) Removal from Iraq and other U.S. aggravated areas using sensibility + balance.
(3) Change the Healthcare System; this I can't tell you how yet until I have more facts.

He also advocated getting rid of all the lobbyists as well as increasing vocational education opportunities.

Although not campaigning in the traditional sense of attending debates or asking for funds, Carter did express an interest in using Internet to unite all the independents and third parties in order to endorse one single candidate.

Carter's running-mate was Dennis Stoltzfoos, another farmer in Live Oak. Raised in Lancaster County, Penn. as an Amish Mennonite, Stoltzfoos went out on his own both spiritually and physically, moving to Florida in 1989. The Carter/Stoltzfoos ticket were not on any ballots nor were they registered as write-in candidates in any state. However, in the event of their victory there would have been a problem with the Constitution since they were residents of the same state.

In 2010 Carter ran as a member of the Real Food Party for the office of Florida Commissioner of Agriculture.
