Dawn Neptune Adams

Dawn Neptune Adams, 1974 -

VP candidate for Progressive Party (aka Independent aka Progressive Party of Oregon aka Green Party of the United States and Independent Green Party) (2020)

Running mate with nominee: Dario David Hunter (b. 1983)
Popular vote: 5,408 (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign:

Dario Hunter of Youngstown, Ohio initially filed with the FEC for US President on Feb. 18, 2019 as a member of the Green Party.

On Mar. 8, 2020 Hunter changed his FEC filing to reflect his campaign HQ had relocated to Walnut, Calif. and his running-mate was Darlene Elias of Massachusetts. In his quest for the nomination he placed second in the primaries with 20.5% behind Howie Hawkins (35.06%) and also finished as a formidable runner-up at the Green convention, July 9-11, 2020.

On July 16, 2020, having been unsuccessful in obtaining the nomination of the Green Party, Hunter changed his party designation to Independent in his FEC filing and continued his campaign. In the process he and Elias had been highly critical of the Green Party's leadership and what he contended was an unfair selection method biased in favor of eventual nominee Howie Hawkins.

On Aug. 15, 2020 his filing was amended yet again to reflect his VP was now Dawn Neptune Adams and they were running under the Progressive Party label. The reasons for the switch in running-mates was not given.

Hunter's autobiography from the campaign website--

Born April 21, 1983 in Livingston, New Jersey USA.

Raised in Jersey City and in Newark, New Jersey.

I was born in New Jersey to an African-American mother and a Persian father. We were a working poor family and for us life was a constant struggle to make ends meet. I held on to my goals, getting into Princeton and through three law degrees. I know what it’s like to come from a hard life, but I also know what it’s like to make good on little more than faith and hard work.

I've previously taught as a high school English teacher, served as a K-8 school administrator and as a community college instructor. I enjoy giving back through education and I believe that it is the key to our advancement as a country, just as it has been key to my own personal upliftment. I formerly practiced law in Canada and more recently as an international environmental lawyer at a firm in Haifa.

In Youngstown, OH, I served as a member of the Youngstown Board of Education (2016-2020), fighting the predatory effort of the State of Ohio to take over our district and trap our children in a CEO-run corporate failure. I fought to ban fracking and successfully took on local and state governments in court to uphold the public's right to public records.

Raised at the intersection of multiple cultural experiences, I have taken a very liberal and open-minded approach to spiritual leadership - converting to Judaism and becoming the first born-Muslim ordained as a rabbi. I was previously the campus rabbi for the College of Wooster (Wooster, OH) as well as a pulpit rabbi to a local congregation in Youngstown, Ohio.

Adams also had a biography on the campaign website--

Dawn Neptune Adams is a member of the Penobscot Nation and a journalist with Sunlight Media Collective. Her grassroots environmental activism began with protecting Indigenous Sacred sites in Huntington Beach, CA in 1998 and continues into the present with Indigenous advocacy at Penobscot Tribal, local, state, and national levels.

An activist for Indigenous rights, Dawn’s personal childhood story of Indigenous child removal was featured in the Emmy-winning documentary Dawnland.

Dawn is a Racial Justice Consultant to the Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine, an active member of Racial Equity & Justice of Bangor, and a former Indigenous Peoples' Policy Advisor for the Hunter/Elias 2020 Presidential campaign. Dawn is directly involved in politics for change, serving as the Wabanaki Liason to the Maine Independent Green Party as well as the current Vice Presidential Candidate to the Dario Hunter 2020 Presidential campaign.

When not battling polluters, plutocrats, and patriarchy, Dawn spends her time raising a pre-teen and building fine furniture. She dreams of a day when we can all eat Salmon from the Penobscot River and live together in peace.

Their platform in summarized form--

Employment

Together we will fight for the human right to food, water, housing and essential utilities.

We will fight for the right to a living wage job with wages indexed to cost of living and inflation (but never less than $15/hr).

Under the REAL Green New Deal there will be full employment – with public works jobs and green jobs.

We will protect workers rights and protect unions - ending firings without just cause.

We will achieve equal pay and equal rights for women, finally passing the Equal Rights Amendment.

Education

There will be tuition free education from grade school through to college.

And we will overcome the educational racism that plagues our schools, subjecting children of color to lessened educational opportunities and the racism of lowered expectations.

We will fight to keep local voice and choice in education – and keep privatization out of our educational system. Our children are not to be used as pawns for corporate profit.

Environment

We will secure clean air, water and soil for future generations and end the environmental racism that plagues minority communities with pollution. We will transition away from fossil fuels, ending their harmful extraction.

And we will set clear achievable goals to transition to 100% renewable energy.

Economy

Bought and paid for Republican and Democratic leaders will tell you that some banks are ‘too big to fail.’ There is no such thing. Break them up. And make corporations and rich pay their fair share. Corporations are not people - and we will no longer allow their interests to outrank the public good.

We shall give grants to green businesses and support community coops in minority communities.

We will democratize monetary policy, giving the public control of the money supply and the creation of credit.

Healthcare

There will be single payer health care for all Americans (i.e. Medicare for All), with no copays, deductibles or restrictions against pre-existing illness.

We will end racism in healthcare that causes a lack of resources and access for minority communities.

Immigration

We will halt the unwarranted deportations and detentions, night raids and the abusive separation of undocumented immigrant families.

We will create a path to citizenship for immigrants that is reasonable, achievable and appreciates the value immigrants bring to our country.

Democracy

Through ranked choice voting, proportional representation and open debates we will seek to perfect the revolution this country's founders started by bringing real democracy and real choice to America’s voters. We will remove the ballot access barriers put in place by the Republicans and Democrats (and their corporate masters).

Equal Rights

We will bring an end to the senseless killing of people of color by law enforcement – supporting the efforts of Black Lives Matter.

We will affirm tribal sovereignty, affirm all treaties, and restore tribal lands to our indigenous peoples – protecting their sacred sites and fighting racism.

Through targeted legislation, we will protect the rights and the lives of LGBTQIA+ persons.

We will stand up against colonialism in Puerto Rico, supporting Puerto Rico's self determination and independence.

We will fight for reparations for Americans of African descent who have been subjected to centuries of slavery and discrimination.

Policing/Prisons/Justice

We will end the war on drugs that feeds into our shameful system of mass incarceration – the new plantation system for African-Americans and people of color.

In response to the ongoing genocide by police, we will demilitarize, defund, disestablish and devolve power to local communities in law enforcement.

We will establish community oversight of public safety and end the quotas for enforcement actions that create a for profit law enforcement model.

We will end the abusive surveillance, spying and violation of our free speech that has occurred under Republican and Democratic administrations alike.

We will protect whistleblowers and publishers like Julian Assange from malicious prosecution with federal level legal protections.

Military/Wars

We will end the war budget and stop funding interventionist activities and wars, closing over 700 military bases abroad. And we will stop aiding and abetting human rights abusers around the world – such as Saudi Arabia and Israel.

We will fund instead a Department of Peace. Our best defense is the pursuit of diplomacy, a strong educational system (i.e. a well educated public) and a strong infrastructure.

And yet we will ensure the quality of veterans' health programs, and honor our military by dealing with the ongoing impact of the military sexual crime crisis outside of the broken military judicial system.

Hunter/Adams could be found on the ballots in Oregon (0.21%) and Colorado (0.01%). They were also registered as write-ins in at least half a dozen states, some of them under the Green Party designation. Nationally they finished in 15th place. Oregon gave them the lion's share of their popular vote.

My name is Deshon Porter I am 41 from Springfield MO I am married to a wonderful woman Donnell Porter. I am running for president  in 2016.  I am GOP  and Springfield tea party member. I stand for Israel  we should help them. and the right of the poor  middle class disabled persons college students veterans.  I am for a balance budget   but not on the backs of the poor or the disabled. The way to do it is with less aid meaning money to other countries, just give them military  aid and supplies but no money we need the money here. stop bailing out banks and help out the people. A veterans now bill to help new members and veterans not after they come from training or war but when they say yes to serve our great country, when they serve so do their families serve as well. Colleges need to stop raising the price to go to school making it harder to get a degree. I want to say yes this country is a christian nation!  I am pro life pro a real marriage between a man and a woman. I have more to say in the next coming weeks

Apr. 1, 2015

This must be made known that I am very serious  about this! Why do they not see that I will make a difference by throwing my name into the hat as they say? As a careing American Christian I will stand for Isreail , college students will be able to get a degree people who serve our great country will not wait to get the help they need to help their families. Standing for real marriage between a man and a woman! People who are disabled will not be forced to get a low or almost no paying job we deserve the same chance to work at a better paying job. No employment testing people need jobs now! We can have a balanced budget but not on the backs of the poor middle class ! Only give help to other countries by military aid and goods not in money we need the money right here! We must take a stand to get our country back!

Apr. 10, 2015
This is a reminder that on 4/26/20155 at 7 pm I will put in my bid to run for  president of our great country!  It is time to let the world know about my intentions on running for the GOP nomination for president of the USA . We need a leader who is a christian I will share my vision for our great country. This election is more important just to only be for the big name candidate. It is time for the people's voice to at last be heard.

NOW TO PROVE THAT I A M VERY SERIOUS ABOUT THIS I WILL BE DOING SPEECHES ON THE SHOW!!! AGAIN THERE IS 12 REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES NOT 11 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RANT OVER!!

Sept. 16, 2015
I still have time to run for congress instead of running for president. Iwill not get notice.

Sept. 20, 2015
First Radio show host then bakers  Deshon Porter forced to drop out of the president race due to same sex marriage anger. Kim Davis  who didn't give marrage to same sex couple due to her christian belief's and now DR. Ben Carlson! Just because he said that Muslims shouldn't be president now they want to silence him to? What is wrong? They the Muslims tried to  stop people from saying pork or pig because it offending them Carlson have just as the same rights as Donald Trump have. I thought we lived in a country that it is OK to agree to disagree, now people are killing dreams just because of a belief? The bakers have had the right not to bake a cake for a same sex wedding but now they lost their bakery You mean to tell me that you can not even say a certain group shouldn't be president and they will tell you not to run? I can say that Donald Trump is too rich to be president he is a billionaire and already successful he don't need to be president. Well Carlson have The same freedom of speech as all Americans that lives in this country! To DR. Carlson please keep running for president don't let the status quo and the Muslims silence your voice our country need you. Stand up for your rights to free speech.

Sept. 22, 2015
I thought that I was going to run for president in 2016 instead I dropped out angry with the Supreme Court in June deciding to side with same sex marriage . that same day as the ruling I got so angry that I quit and announced on my radio show. But I Still wanted to run for office and make a difference in the state of  Missouri. So I found out that I am of age and can run for Congress. The 7 district where me and my princess wife  live in is held by congressmen Billy Long. I hope to win his seat it is time for a outsider to represent our district our rights and freedoms. Yes I have no experience in office but I am a citizen of this country and I care I watch the news pray and I want to do something about what our district is going through.  Slogan serving God first then country. Here is the new campaign website.

In Nov. 2015 Porter endorsed Dr. Carson for President. In Feb. 2016 he backed Sen. Cruz.

On May 29, 2016, Porter offered this reflection--

I wish I could have stayed in the 2016  race ! Would have gave voters another choice on the ballot. We are forced to choose between Trump for the Republican side and maybe Hillary Clinton?  Come on Bernie Sanders!  I wanted Ted Cruz to stay in for he is a Christian! We don't have the lesser of two evils at all. What would it be like if I was elected President? For starters there will be no plan parenthood ever, no more killing of innocent babies. No doctors would be allowed to do that at all. Second I would do is choose a new head of the VA to help our veterans get better treatment here in our own country to let veterans go to any hospital for care. To help them to stay in there homes and not be put on the streets. We must end homelessness and poverty. People who have disability shouldn't have less money forced to fend for themselves they must have a cost of living increase. Just like our seniors have to choose between food and medicine they should have more money as well. We need a better trained military not weakening. How by cutting the raises of Congress and the Senate. The IRS is gone there will be a simple tax return  all college loans will be forgiven  for the department. Education will be closed there will be another opportunity for aid for college one way is to make college free if not a four year college at least a two year college and make scholarship easy to get for deserving students don't make them jump hoops. Schools will be given back to state and local government only ,  Homeschool with be a right! Health care  Obama care is a thing. of the past   there will be Porter care my wife Teri Donnell Porter who will be a wonderful first lady  will be in charge of  the Porter care team that will  bring our healthcare system back into shape. Pre existing condition will still qualify for Porter care. NASA will be back in full capacity but not sending people to Mars there is no way to come back or  people will die along the way. Let's send them to planets other than the moon that is close to earth. We will stand by Israel and help our Jewish friends for if we do we will be blessed if not we will be cursed. No more inaugural events in cold weather it should be done  in the spring time. When the weather is nicer. War should only come to another country under Congress vote not till then we send troops into harms way for our freedoms.

In a Youtube presentation June 18, 2016, Porter sort of re-entered the race when he said he was open to having delegates in the Republican, Democratic, and Green parties cast their votes for him at their conventions. He also stated he was running for President in 2020.

In the general election of 2016 he voted for Jill Stein of the Green Party. Porter also announced shortly before the election he would be running for the City Council of Springfield, Mo.

Running-mate Stowe's Facebook indicated support for the Electoral College, a celebration of gun culture and fishing, and defending what he described as the "Confederate battle flag." Stowe lived in Maysville, Ark. and backed Trump in 2016.

Reillie Alene Murphy

Reillie Alene Murphy, June 1998 -

VP candidate for Justice for Harambe Party (2016)

Running mate with nominee: James Walter Jobe (b. 1996)
Popular vote: ? (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign:

James Jobe of Norfolk, Va. and a student at Old Dominion University, filed as a write-in for President with the FEC on Aug. 28, 2016. At the same time Jobe was running as a write-in for the Virginia Beach, Va. City Council. His running-mate was Reillie Murphy, a high school student in Georgia.

Jobe/Murphy were registered as write-ins only in the State of Washington where they ran under the banner of the Justice for Harambe Party. Harambe was a gorilla in a Cincinnati zoo who was shot and killed in May 2016 when a 3 year-old boy fell into his enclosure and a zookeeper felt the child was in danger. Harambe posthumously became a widespread Internet meme including an inevitable "Harambe for President" campaign.

Jobe's political stance could probably be best described as Left/Libertarian. A perennial candidate for a variety of offices since 2016 Jobe has usually identified as an Independent but has at different times embraced the Libertarian and Green parties. Murphy also seems to lean Left.

Both candidates were considerably under the Constitutionally mandated age of 35 in order to serve in the offices they sought.

In March 2020 Jobe officially declared herself transgender and became Charlotte Rose Jobe.

Election history: none

Other occupations: massage therapist

Notes:
Murphy is now married and has a new surname.

Jill Ellen Stein

Jill Ellen Stein, May 14, 1950 (Chicago, Ill.) -

VP candidate for BlueGreen Revolution Party (2016)

Running mate with nominee: James Wesley Beebe
Popular vote: ? (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign:

In a handwritten letter to the FEC Dr. James Wesley Beebe of Ventura, Calif. declared he was running for President as a Democrat on Oct. 26, 2015. He included a document entitled Twelve Visions for America.

Beebe's effort did not appear to be related to the pre-existing Twelve Visions Party. In the fall of 2015 he visited Iowa and waged a low budget campaign in preparation for the Democratic caucuses. He also sent the following missive to the DNC Chair on Nov. 8, 2015--

Dear Debbie Wasserman Schultz,
As of October 26, 2015 I became an official candidate for President of the United States of America. My e mail is ikimosabebb@yahoo.com and my Web Site is www.DrBeebeforPresident.com. I believe judging by the hundreds of interactions with voters that my candidacy adds a significant dimension to the Democratic debate. Please read my 12 Visions for America on my web site. I am a third generation retired United Methodist Pastor on my mother's side I have a Jewish Rabbi named Jacobs. I would take my confirmation classes to Jewish Synagoges and would be asked why are you doing what you do and I would say I am following after a Jewish Rabbi named Jesus. I believe we are at a crucial crossroads in America and need to look to the Pacific look to the ways of peace and we can realize the vision of Jesus to overcome evil with good. There is no greater good than water. No water, no food, no security and no life. My proposal is by 2020 to have in place at least 21desalination plants and permanently end the drought in America with a pipeline of water from the Pacific Ocean. My second vision can fundamentally change the debate on guns and change the fact that over 30,000 are killed every year by guns in America. Preserving the 2nd Amendment we will issue  a star trek like phaser that every citizen of age will have to enable people to knock people out but not mass murder people. The country that sent us to the moon and back safely can perfect this. Maybe available on our phones so that we can track any abuse. We want America to prosper and to be safe once again.

In an interview you said you are impartial as to candidates for President and I would love to have an opportunity to join in the Democratic Debate. I could fly to the CBS debate this Saturday. I understand it is late but I have been profoundly concerned that on both the Republican and Democratic side there has been no challenge  to our foreign policy of unwittingly arming both sides in conflicts and then having to bomb our own weapons. We amazingly are occupying countries and then giving them our military technology falsely thinking we can tell who is for us and who is against us. We need to stop trying to dictate the forms of government in other countries while advocating in many non violent ways for human rights and education.

We need to have a strategy for peace and it begins at home but can spread around the world helping the displaced people of the world. The reality is global warming will raise the sea levels and it is a brilliant practical strategy to have new fresh water lakes here in America and all over the world. I am a UCLA graduate and have a Masters Degree and Doctorate from the School of Theology at Claremont. Ralph Nader said our number l job in our lifetime is being a citizen and now we are all global citizens. We need to do smart things in America and join the BlueGreen Revolution it  will create millions of meaningful new employment opportunities. Let me join the discussion. Aloha Dr.Beebe ps. I drove 2,000 miles to Des Moines but the campaign RV broke down and the rental did as well. I'll fly this time. My grandmother's maiden name was Schultz. We may be related at least by Adam and Eve.

On Jan. 18, 2016 Beebe changed his party affiliation to Independent. On the heels of that form came another handwritten letter indicating Beebe was running under the banner of the BlueGreen Revolution Party.

"Doc Beebe," as he liked to call himself, expressed his feeling that he was politically allied with Jill Stein and the Green Party. His Facebook post for Apr. 18, 2016--

Amazing how the population of the United States is reaching a consensus. We need better candidates! Both Trump and Hillary are underwater in disapproval. Candidates like Jill Stein of the Green Party and Dr. Beebe of tthe BlueGreen Revolution Party are going to surface when the American People wake up and realize we are going off a cliff lead by those who have sold out to the greedy unpatriotic corporations and the arms merchants. Why not give the BlueGreen Revolution a chance and give the wisdom of Jesus a chance and overcome evil with good. We occupy other countries give them our weapons and then are surprised when they turn on us. Conrad once had a cartoon with a picture of Frankenstein that read Made in America. From Bin Laden we supported against Russia occupying Afganistan to BagDaddy we encouraged at Guantanamo Bay. We create these monsters and are so surprised when they turn on us and then we congratulate ourselves when we have to take them out. We create the problem because we surrender the public good to private greed. The great lie is that people in the middle east are different they are like us. People all around the world want self determination fruits and vegetables and clear clean cool medicinal water.

Our founding fathers cheered Patrick Henry who declared Give me Liberty or Give me death. We need to learn the lesson of England and have engagement in diplomacy but a policy of reliquinishment of our occupations. We are going on 21 trillion over a cliff and almost everyone except Stein and Beebe want to keep going like mindless lemmings in lock step over the cliff to 40 and 50 trillion. Stop the insanity and look to the wisdom of the Prince of Peace and overcome evil with good. Peace, Prosperity and Plentiful Pastures here and around the world. These corrupt politicians need to get out of the way of the people of the world who want peace! wwwDrBeebeforPresident.com

On Aug. 18, 2016 he added--

Jill Stein and the Green party cannot succeed without the Blue of the Ocean making America Green! The BlueGreen Revolution!

On a Facebook post for Aug. 25, 2016, Beebe stated: "Jill Stein will make a great Vice President!" But Stein was already-- for the second consecutive national election-- the Presidential nominee of the Green Party.

Beebe appears not have registered as a write-in in any state. Whether Stein was ever aware she a VP contender is not known.

Election history:
2002 - Governor of Massachusetts (Green-Rainbow Party) - defeated
2004 - Massachusetts State House of Representatives (Green-Rainbow Party) - defeated
2005-2010 - Member of the Lexington (Mass.) Town Meeting (Nonpartisan)

Other occupations: physician, educator

Notes:
Winner of the 2002 election was Mitt Romney.
Stein was formerly a Democrat.

Niles William Niemuth

Niles William Niemuth, 1988 -

VP candidate for Socialist Equality Party (aka Socialism Equality Anti-War) (2016)

Running mate with nominee: Jerome White (b. 1959)
Popular vote: 471 (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign:

2016 would be Jerry White's fourth run as the Presidential candidate of the Socialist Equality Party, having previously campaigned in 1996, 2008, and 2012.

The Apr. 22, 2016 SEP press release described running-mate Niles Niemuth--

Niles Niemuth, 28, was raised in a working-class family in Wisconsin and became a member of the SEP during the 2011 mass protests against budget cuts imposed by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. Niles joined the staff of the WSWS after completing his master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, where he specialized in African-American history. Niemuth has written extensively on US social conditions, working-class struggles and the government’s assault on democratic rights.

The same announcement offered critical views of Clinton and Trump, but more energy was spent assailing Sen. Sanders, with an additional swipe at the Green Party--

The widespread popular support for the campaign of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is largely based on his identification as a “democratic socialist.” His unexpected string of victories in state primaries shows that there is an enormous desire among workers and young people for an alternative to capitalism. The scale of his support has exploded the official narrative of American politics, according to which no one claiming to be “socialist” can get a hearing.

However, Sanders has demonstrated by his long political career that he is neither a socialist nor an opponent of the political establishment. Even when a nominal “independent,” he collaborated with the Democrats and staunchly supported the Obama administration. He defends capitalism and American imperialism, and he promotes economic nationalism, seeking to scapegoat workers in Mexico, China and other countries for the loss of jobs in the US.

Sanders’ central role is to utilize his bogus credentials as a “socialist” to waylay popular hostility among workers and young people to the two-party system and divert it back into the safe channels of the Democratic Party. The experience of the Obama administration, which came to power promising “hope” and “change,” has exposed the role of the Democratic Party as an instrument of the corporate and financial elite. With the assistance of the unions and an array of upper middle-class pseudo-left groups, the Democrats have perfected the practice of combining empty demagogy and various forms of racial, gender and identity politics with a thoroughly right-wing and pro-war policy.

If Sanders were to run an “independent” campaign—as urged by some of his political backers—this would not change the character of his campaign. His program is based on defense of the capitalist system and opposition to a political movement of the working class.

The same applies to the nominally “independent” campaign of the Green Party. The Green Party is a capitalist party that functions as an external pressure group on the Democrats. When Green parties have participated in governments—most notably in Germany—they have invariably backed the policy of the ruling class, including attacks on workers at home and support for imperialist war abroad.

While presenting a survey of unusual Presidential candidates, writer Lisa Pham made this comment regarding the 2016 SEP ticket--

Jerry White is running as a member of the Socialist Equality Party (SEP), and actually has a pretty comprehensive website. I’m not just saying this as a liberal-minded, communist college student. White actually offers comprehensive explanations of his positions backed by figures and charts and other official-looking things. While this may be good for anyone who really seeks to understand who he is as a candidate, it doesn’t help with the “everyone is crazy” theme of my article. So we’re going to move on.

White/Niemuth were on the ballot in Louisiana and registered write-ins in half a dozen more states. In Louisiana they finished 13 out of 13 with 0.02% of the vote. The Party's popular vote result peaked in 1988 and had been steadily dwindling ever since and now they landed in the 3-digit range.

Although listed on the Louisiana ballot as a resident of Wisconsin, by Sept. 2016 Niemuth was registered to vote in Michigan, where White also lived. But the residency potential problem of two candidates from the same state was overshadowed by the fact Niemuth was under the age of 35, which was mandated by the Constitution.

Election history:
2018 - US House of Representatives (Mich.) (Socialist Equality Party) - defeated

Other occupations: door factory worker, writer, activist, webmaster

Notes:
Looks like Niemuth lives in Hamtramck, Mich., the same home as Matt Feazell's Cynicalman.

Angela Nicole Walker

Angela Nicole Walker, January 19, 1974 (Milwaukee, Wis.) -

VP candidate for Socialist Party of the United States of America (aka Socialist Party USA aka Natural Law Party) (2016)
VP candidate for Socialist Party of the United States of America (aka Socialist Party USA aka Green Party of the United States aka Legal Marijuana Now Party aka DC Statehood/Green Party aka Green Rainbow Party aka Pacific Green Party aka Independent aka Mountain Party) (2020)

Running mate with nominee (2016): Emidio Soltysik (1974-2020)
Running mate with nominee (2020): Howard Gresham Hawkins (b. 1952)
Popular vote (2016): 2,689 (0.00%)
Popular vote (2020): 405,622 (0.26%)
Electoral vote (2016, 2020): 0/538

The campaign (2016):

The Socialist Party USA nominated Emidio "Mimi" Soltysik of Los Angeles and Angela Nicole Walker of Milwaukee in Oct. 2015 as their Presidential ticket for the 2016 election.

The SPUSA found itself, at least early in the election season, campaigning against Bernie Sanders more than the status quo candidates. Soltysik told the press, "He has had a long history of support for war and he has also had a healthy support for Israel, which we tend to see as an apartheid state. Some things he has done and advocated for are completely incompatible with a responsible socialist program."

The quite lengthy SPUSA 2016 platform had this preamble--

The Socialist Party USA stands for the abolition of every form of domination and exploitation, whether based on social class, gender, race/ethnicity, age, education, sexual orientation, or other characteristics.

We are committed to the transformation of capitalism through the creation of a democratic socialist society based on compassion, empathy, and respect as well as the development of new social structures.  Socialism will establish a new social and economic order in which workers and community members will take responsibility for and control of their interpersonal relationships, their neighborhoods, their local government, and the production and distribution of all goods and services.

For these reasons we call for social ownership and democratic control of productive resources, for a guarantee to all of the right to participate in societal production, and to a fair share of society’s product, in accordance with individual needs.

As we pursue a socialist transformation of society, we join with others in making radical demands on the existing system: demands that challenge the basic assumptions of a capitalist market economy while pointing the way to a new society. Although reforms will not in themselves bring about socialism, the fight for them will advance the cause by demonstrating the inherent limitations and injustice of the capitalist system. As we build the socialist movement, we organize around a platform committed to our common and interdependent struggles and aspirations.

When the Los Angeles Times asked Soltysik what he would do if elected he responded, "We would have to fire ourselves on the first day. You can't do that job without becoming a war criminal."

Soltysik/Walker were on the ballot in Colorado (0.01%) and Michigan (0.05%), the latter under the Natural Law Party banner. The were registered as write-ins in 8 additional states. In the event of their victory Walker would have assumed the Presidency upon the death of Soltysik June 28, 2020.

The campaign (2020):

If you followed the activities of national third political parties during the 2020 election, you could not avoid Howie Hawkins. Although his history was with the Green Party, he launched an aggressive effort to unite several progressive organizations and was partially successful. His running-mate in all cases was Angela Walker.

Hawkins, of Syracuse, N.Y., filed with the FEC as a Green Party candidate on May 14, 2019.

Hawkins/Walker won the nomination of the Socialist Party USA in Oct. 2019. On July 11, 2020, Hawkins/Walker received the Green Party nomination in their Age of COVID online convention. In Aug. 2020 Hawkins/Walker were nominated (some sources say "endorsed") by the Legal Marijuana Now Party. In the case of the Legal Marijuana Now Party, Rudy Reyes became the Presidential nominee of the Legal Marijuana Now Party ca. Mar. 2020 when Presidential nominee Mark Elworth Jr stepped down to run for US Congress as a Democrat in Nebraska. After winning the primary Elworth switched back to the LMNP and resumed his top spot on the ticket while Reyes once again became the VP. In August 2020 the LMNP dropped their ticket entirely and backed Hawkins. Socialist Alternative endorsed the Hawkins/Walker campaign later in the season.

Solidarity initially supported Hawkins/Walker, but then rescinded their backing after a poll of their members.

The Green Party nomination process was not without controversy. Dario Hunter, who was a rival for the nomination, decided to continue campaigning to the general election. The Alaska Green Party broke ranks with the national party and nominated a ticket of Jesse Ventura/Cynthia McKinney who were also registered write-ins in California.

The Rhode Island Green Party refused to name a candidate for fear of throwing the election to Trump. Democrats were successful in preventing ballot access for Hawkins/Walker in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Hawkins also attempted, and failed, to gain the nomination of the Peace and Freedom Party creating some political bad blood between himself and winner Gloria La Riva in the process.

Unlike 2016, when the Trump administration was simply a dystopian concept, by 2020 it was a reality that had polarized the country. Many progressive voters felt that Trump's incompetence and impotence in the face of a national emergency, coupled with his authoritarian white nationalist style, made even the most centrist Democrat seem acceptable by comparison. With Sen. Sanders himself putting some energy into the Biden electioneering, Hawkins would find it a difficult task to recruit new voters.

Even so, Hawkins/Walker finished an impressive 4th place nationally. On the ballot in 29 states + DC and registered as write-ins in a dozen more they were within the potential of receiving enough votes from the Electoral College to win. On the printed ballots they were chiefly identified as Green Party candidates. Their strongest results: Maine (1%), Hawaii (0.67%), Maryland (0.52%), Massachusetts and Illinois (0.51% each), Oregon and District of Columbia (0.50% each). The three close states where they could have been potential spoilers-- Georgia, Arizona, and Wisconsin-- were all carried by Biden. In all three Hawkins/Walker were not on the ballot but were registered as write-ins.

On Nov. 9, 2020, Hawkins filed with the FEC for the 2024 Presidential election under the category of "Other."

Election history:
2014 - Milwaukee County Sheriff (Wis.) (Independent) - defeated

Other occupations: bus driver, dump truck driver, union organizer

Notes:
During the 2020 election cycle I had been in contact with Walker and the campaign's PR man, Kevin Zeese. We reached the point where Walker agreed to an interview and she was sent a list of questions. But then Zeese suddenly died and that apparently stopped everything.

Lamont Gregory Lilly

Lamont Gregory Lilly, October 1, 1979 (Fayetteville, N.C.) -

VP candidate for Workers World Party (aka Unaffiliated) (2016)

Running mate with nominee: Monica Gail Moorehead (b. 1952)
Popular vote: 4,317 (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign:

Monica Moorehead was making her third run for President as the nominee of the Workers World Party. She had previously been the standard bearer of the Marxist-Leninist group in 1996 and 2000. Her 2016 running-mate was activist Lamont G. Lilly.

The WWP was starting to look like an on-again off-again party in terms of Electoral campaigns. In 2008 the WWP endorsed Green Party nominee Cynthia McKinney. In 2012 the WWP did not field a candidate at all. But then again, elections were not their primary focus.

The campaign website outlined their platform and tactics--

Workers World Party is participating in the 2016 presidential election. Not because we believe the election means any thing. We are running to expose the election.

Our candidates will be talking about the real issues facing workers and oppressed people – and organizing for the real solutions. Revolutionary solutions. We believe that the kind of socialism Bernie Sanders talks about only provides more cosmetic changes, a softer kinder of capitalism. But Sanders change means the capitalist system still stands. Reforming capitalism will not solve the greatest problems facing humanity.

Mass struggle, not elections, is the way forward.

The elections that take place every four years bring only cosmetic change: different faces administering the government on behalf of the same billionaire masters. Who really runs society? It is the capitalist class that exploits the working class and the oppressed. The great mass of people have no real representation because the government, whether headed by Democrats or Republicans, exists to serve the interests of the bosses and warmakers.

The Workers World Moorehead-Lilly campaign declares: Elections will matter when Black Lives matter.

Will the election of Hillary Rodham Clinton or Bernie Sanders mean that racist police terror against the Black community will finally stop? Of course not. Will it mean an end to the mass deportations of migrant workers? No not at all. Will it mean a cancellation of the student debt, more jobs or guaranteed decent healthcare?

The only time there is change in this country is when the people rise up and fight for it. That’s why we’re running: to help organize the fight.

Will the election of a Republican – whether it’s Cruz, Trump, Rubio, or Bush–usher in a period of reactionary setbacks? Possibly. But it could also usher in a revolutionary response.

Our campaign will be all about the struggle against the ruling class – the 1 % and the politicians who do their bidding. Our candidates, Monica Moorehead and Lamont Lilly, are in that struggle already.

We will travel the country building solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. Standing up to stop imperialist wars abroad and the war on immigrants at home. We will converge at the Republican Convention in July in Cleveland and demand Justice for Tamir Rice. And we will demand the same at the Democratic Party Convention in Philadelphia.

Elections will matter when all working class and oppressed people matter. Only by building the fight for socialist revolution can workers change the conditions of exploitation and terror they face today.

We do not fight for a softer, kinder capitalism, for just a little more of the wealth we have created. We want it all. We want to build a workers’ world. This is the message of our campaign.

Lilly described to a reporter what it was like campaigning on a shoestring budget: "It costs an absurd amount of money just to get on the ballot in most states ... We don't have the big-business engine behind us pushing out our message and our candidates. We don't own the TV and radio stations or the newspapers. This two-party system is designed to prevent third parties from gaining footing ... For Democrats, two hundred dollars is chump change. To us, we can really put that to work. That's two train tickets for the candidates. That allows us to eat while we're on the trail."

"The more places I go, the more I see that people out there are really ready for something new. And not some new clichƩ, like Obama. I mean a brand new system. We're up against these huge, elite corporations that don't care about us. They don't care about working people. They don't care about our ability to pay for decent housing, or our right to livable wages, or our right to be members of unions, or our right to drink clean water, whether here or in Detroit ..."

The Moorehead/Lilly ticket was found on the ballot in New Jersey (0.05%), Utah (0.05%), and Wisconsin (0.06%). They were also registered as write-ins in 11 additional states.

In 2018 the WWP experienced a split when some members gathered in Detroit and formed the Communist Workers League.

Election history: none

Other occupations: US Army Reserve, Director of the NCCU African American Male Leadership Academy, activist, journalist, poet, lecturer

Notes:
Joined the WWP in 2011 and left the Party in 2018.

Peyton Drozd Williams

Peyton Drozd Williams, January 3, 2000 (Germany) -

VP candidate for Independent (2016)

Running mate with nominee: Elijah D. Manley (b. ca1999)
Popular vote: ? (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign:

Teenager Elijah D. Manley of Sunrise, Fla. filed for the office of US President with the FEC with No Party Affiliation in June 2015. In Oct. 2015 he modified his party status to Independent and then again in Apr. 2016 to the Green Party.

Manley expressed political policies closely in line with Sen. Sanders' Democratic Socialist views. He also planned to make his age, which rendered him ineligible to attain the Presidency, a springboard to discuss changing the Constitutional requirements. He told one reporter, "I have always stressed the importance of youth rights in all portions of society.  We the youth, and I myself, have repeatedly been told that we are not old enough to do things, ineligible, or incompetent; that we’re not competent to lead the world. That’s the basis of my decision to run. Along with all these other oppressions, I’ve decided that I am running for President of the United States, with regard to the age restrictions. Let me tell you why once more. Age restrictions have become extremely unjust and have limited our very involvement in this system. I’m going to restore that and through my Presidential bid, we’re going to become better than these restrictions."

His platform was fairly short but to the point--

Social Justice
We need to reform our law enforcement system, so that there is accountability to the people of the community, rather than internal investigations by cops. We also need government reform.

Universal/Single Payer Healthcare
The human right to health guarantees a system of health protection for all. Everyone has the right to the health care they need, and to living conditions that enable us to be healthy, such as adequate food, housing, and a healthy environment. Elijah's plan would be to cut unnecessary government spending, from programs like defense and increase funding to operate healthcare systems. To pay for universal healthcare, Elijah would substantially increase taxes on the wealthy.

Energy, Environmental & Ecological Justice
Elijah supports a 100% renewable energy system by 2020, and a ban on fracking. People and Planet before profit. Climate change is a serious threat to our national security, existence, living conditions, and the future generation.

Youth Rights
The backbone and core of Elijah's Presidential campaign is Youth Rights and Youth Liberation. It all started here:

Universal Tuition Free Education and the Abolition of Student Debt
Elijah Manley not only supports tuition free universal education, and abolishing student loan debt. If we can bail out the banks, we can bail out our people.

A noteworthy personal event for Manley took place during the campaign, possibly a first for a Presidential candidate, as explained in the following Facebook post--

Ajamu Sibeko Baraka

Ajamu Sibeko Baraka, October 25, 1953 (Chicago, Ill.) -

VP candidate for Green Party of the United States (aka Independent aka DC Statehood Green Party aka Green Independent Party aka Green Rainbow Party aka Pacific Green Party aka Progressive Party aka Unaffiliated aka Mountain Party) (2016)
VP candidate for Wake Up (2016)

Running mate with nominee: Jill Ellen Stein (b. 1950)
Running mate with nominee: Charles R. Zerilli
Popular vote (Stein): 1,355,128 (0.99%)
Popular vote (Zerilli): 0 (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign (Stein):

Jill Stein was nominated as the Green Party standard bearer for the second time in 2016. Her official running-mate was Ajamu Baraka.

Stein's direction had veered a bit since 2012. In the 2016 election some critical observers felt she was starting to demonstrate what critics call "conspirituality," where New Age followers and the more cultish Trump adherents overlap in their denial of science and embracing a multitude of conspiracy theories. For example, the belief that Big Pharma controls the government regulatory agencies and vaccinations are harmful. Although Stein did not go full anti-vaxxer, she was accused by critics of pandering to that demographic through the use of linguistic "dog whistles." Critics also contended she used the same method in suggesting Wi-Fi causes brain damage and that the 9/11 attack deserved more investigation.

Although even skeptics agreed the Greens seemed to be more reality based when it came to environmental science, they pointed out their medical science was quite another thing (which is ironic considering Stein is a doctor), as demonstrated on the Green webpage--

Greens support a wide-range of health care services, not just traditional medicine which too often emphasizes “a medical arms race” that relies upon high-tech intervention, surgical techniques and costly pharmaceuticals. Chronic conditions are often best cured by alternative medicine. We support the teaching, funding and practice of holistic health approaches and as appropriate, the use of complementary and alternative therapies such as herbal medicines, homeopathy, naturopathy, traditional Chinese medicine and other healing approaches.

The rise and fall of the Bernie Sanders campaign left a good sized number of voters without a home. The Green Party was able to seize upon this opportunity. The Greens disdained Sanders' method of working within a major party, and felt everything the Democrats co-opted from them, such as the Green New Deal, became watered down after it had been essentially mainstreamed (hmm, interesting accidental aquatic wordplay there). Stein also did not seem to care if Trump emerged the winner in 2016--

The answer to neofascism is stopping neoliberalism. Putting another Clinton in the White House will fan the flames of this right-wing extremism. We have known that for a long time ever since Nazi Germany. We are going to stand up to Donald Trump and to stand up to Hillary Clinton!

Stein told the media she would step aside if Sanders was willing to run for President in the Green Party. She felt Clinton could do more damage if elected because she was competent where Trump was clearly in over his head.

The fact her running-mate Baraka was outspoken about his embrace of certain conspiracy theories did not help with the Greens escaping the "woo" image that took off like a rocket with Cynthia McKinney in 2008 and was now solidifying in 2016. He was particularly interested in what he viewed as US-generated "false flag" operations.

Baraka also held an unorthodox opinion regarding the 2015 Charlie Hebdo shootings. An essay he wrote on the subject includes this sample--

Je Suis Charlie has become a sound bite to justify the erasure of non-Europeans, and for ignoring the sentiments, values and views of the racialized “other.” In short, Je Suis Charlie has become an arrogant rallying cry for white supremacy that was echoed at the white power march on Sunday in Paris and in the popularity of the new issue of Charlie Hebdo.

It was published as part of his article, "The Paris Attacks and the White Lives Matter Movement" in Kevin Barrett's anthology entitled ANOTHER French False Flag?: Bloody Tracks from Paris to San Bernardino with contributions by Holocaust deniers, 9/11 Truthers, anti-Semites, and other conspiracy theorists. Baraka was forced to issue a statement that he had no idea of the overall scope of the monograph and found himself on the defensive for most of the campaign.

Baraka was not a fan of President Obama, who he called an "Uncle Tom," nor of Sen. Sanders and the majority of his supporters--

In their desperate attempt to defend Sanders and paint his critics as dogmatists and purists, the Sanders supporters have not only fallen into the ideological trap of a form of narrow “left” nativism, but also the white supremacist ethical contradiction that reinforces racist cynicism in which some lives are disposable for the greater good of the West.

And as much as the ‘Sandernistas ’ attempt to disarticulate Sanders “progressive” domestic policies from his documented support for empire (even the Obamaite aphorism “The perfect is the enemy of the good” is unashamedly deployed), it should be obvious that his campaign is an ideological prop – albeit from a center/left position – of the logic and interests of the capitalist-imperialist settler state.

The silence of the left on Yemen is not a trivial matter. The fact that so many white leftist supporters of Sanders can politically and psychologically disconnect his domestic program from his foreign policy positions that objectively support U.S. and Western neoliberal hegemony means that not only have they found a way to be comfortable collaborating with imperialism, but that they have also decided that they can support the implicit hierarchy that determines from an imperial perspective that lives in the White West matter more than others.

This is not to suggest that everyone who might find a way to support Sanders is a closet racist and supporter of imperialism. I know plenty of folks of all backgrounds who “feel the Bern.” There is, however, an objective logic to their uncritical support that they cannot escape and which I believe represents the ongoing crisis of radicalism in the U.S. and Europe.

For some reason Howie Hawkins once again ended up as a stand-in VP, this time in Minnesota, Vermont, and Washington. He was quoted by Politico during the Green convention with a statement that turned out to be prophetic--

The biggest threat to the Democrats isn't losing votes to the Greens ... Working class whites say, well, the Democrats don't have all that much for us. And Trump sounds like he's mad at the system. So they throw a protest vote to him ... the African-American, Latino, Asian working class. Barack Obama got them out twice, but he didn't do a lot for them, and he's not on the ticket this time.

Stein finished in 4th place with 1,457,288 votes (1.06%), the second highest result in the history of the Party. Of that, the Stein/Baraka team accounted for 1,355,128 votes. The ticket had their strongest results in: Hawaii (2.97%), Oregon (2.50%), Kansas (1.98%), California (1.96%), Maine (1.91%), Alaska (1.80%), and Montana (1.60%).

Some pundits point to Stein's percentages in Wisconsin (1.04%), Pennsylvania (0.81%), and Michigan (1.07%)-- all swing states that voted for Trump who won by margins below the Green total-- and accuse her of being a spoiler as they accused Nader in 2000. However, in all three states the Libertarians had considerably higher percentages than the Greens, placing third, which complicates the "spoiler equation." If anything, a case could be made both third parties drew away a significant number of "Protest Voters" who otherwise would have voted for Trump and he won those states in spite of that.
