The campaign (2012):

Michael Baranowski, a Cincinnati resident who was a political science professor at Northern Kentucky University made an announcement (most likely tongue-in-cheek) on Facebook, Dec. 1, 2011--

I've decided to run for President. If elected, I promise to close our embassy in Iran (and, what the hell, in Cuba too). Sarah Palin will be my VP. We will seriously kick some foreign policy ass.

That post appeared to be the sole exploit of the Baranowski/Palin 2012 campaign. However, Baranowski did file with the FEC for US President on Feb. 13, 2016 under No Party Affiliation. Although I could not verify a running-mate for him in that one, on Mar. 26, 2016 Baranowski (a USMC vet) suggested himself as a potential VP for retired Marine General James Mattis in the event the latter decided to run for President.

The campaign (2016):

Barry Johnson filed with the FEC as an Independent for President on Aug. 5, 2014. He was originally headquartered in Junction City, Kan. but at some point relocated to Buffalo, Wyo.

Johnson launched an aggressive social media campaign, usually adorned in a cowboy hat with a crucifix attached in the front covering his long hair, a bolo tie, and a very serious demeanor. He also opened a campaign office in a stripmall in Junction City at the start of his campaign. In many cases his social media posts had links to Right wing polemicists and Fox News. Peppered in there were posts where the single Johnson was reaching out for female companionship. Some samples from his Facebook campaign site--

The Election flipped when Secret Service Agents blocked My way at Knotts Berry Farm. Trying to cross the street the Agent on the same corner stood in My way. And would not let Me get to the button.
I said I did not want the President near me.
He said Barry I will take You to the ground.

On Jan. 5, 2015 Johnson indicated former Gov. Sarah Palin was "my first choice for VP" and provided a link to her pontificating on Fox. Palin had been Sen. McCain's running-mate in 2008 and conventional wisdom has it that her lack of administrative experience combined with extreme pandering to the Christian far Right was one of the major factors in the Republican ticket's defeat that year.

Johnson was certainly not the first obscure Presidential candidate to select an unwitting celebrity or famous political figure as a running-mate. Given her iconic status with Tea Party conservatives, it is surprising no previous Independents had "nominated" her earlier. Palin probably had no idea she was "running" for VP a second time.

During the course of Johnson's campaign, Palin's stint as a pundit for Fox came to an end in 2015 when her contract was not renewed. Also in that year her book Sweet Freedom: A Devotional was published, a work linking Bible verses with politics.

In Jan. 2016 she endorsed Trump but interestingly that action did not later translate into a Cabinet or executive appointment. Some pundits felt Trump's hypersensitive reaction to criticism would not have tolerated an outspoken woman like Palin in his ranks, especially one who would have distracted the media spotlight and attention he so much craved.

Johnson died in Buffalo, Wyo. a week after the election, Nov. 15, 2016. If the Johnson/Palin ticket had emerged victorious on Election Day, the Electoral College would have faced an interesting set of decisions.

Jeffrey Harlan "Jeff" Boss of New Jersey seems to have started his career as a perennial candidate in 2008 when he simultaneously ran for the Presidency and US Senate. He has run under the Vote Here, Independent Party, Democratic Party, and NSA Did 9/11 banners. A former stockbroker, Boss had a business called Immortal Corporation which included the service of freezing deceased pets in the hope that one day they can be brought back to life when in the future someone has invented such a process.

WHEN I CAME OUT OF THE TERMINAL I WAS TOLD THAT A PERSON WAS JUST UNDER MY CAR, AND HAD JUST LEFT.  HE POINTED OUT THE THREE MEN WHO HAD BEEN UNDER MY CAR. THEY WERE IN A GREEN VW BEETLE{CAB]. I WENT OVER AND BLOCKED  THE CAR FROM LEAVING AND CALLED FOR THE POLICE. THE POLICE CAME AND THE BOMB SQUAD CAME AND TOOK  OUT A YELLOW PACKAGE.  THAT LOOKED LIKE A YELLOW GLAD BAG WRAPPED UP WITH A PIECE OF CLAY INSIDE FROM UNDER THE FRONT OF THE CAR. ON MAY 3, 2006 I RENTED A CAR FROM DOLLAR RENT A CAR  IN  MANHATTAN  IN THE 20’S NEAR 1ST AVENUE.I THEN DROVE THE CAR DOWNTOWN TO SEE SOMEONE AT THE FBI BUILDING . WHEN I PARKED THE CAR AT THE GARAGE ACROSS FROM 10 WORTH STREET, I LOOKED UNDER THE CAR AND SAW A YELLOW PACKAGE ATTACHED TO THE GAS TANK.  I WENT OVER TO THE FBI BUILDING  AND SPOKE TO BADGE NBR 1624 WHO OBVIOSLY WAS ON THE PAYROLL OF THE NSA AND WOULDN’T HELP ME. I WENT BACK TO THE GARAGE AND THE ATTENDENTS TOLD ME THAT THEY TOOK THE PACKAGE OFF THE GAS TANK .THEY SAID THEY WORKED FOR THE NSA AND THAT THE NSA WAS WORRIED THAT I WOULD BRING THE FBI TO THE GARAGE SO THEY HAD THEM REMOVE IT.

I HAVE A LETTER FROM A PRIVATE SECURITY FIRM SAYING THAT MY CAR IS BUGGED. I HAVE A VIDEO FROM MY AUTO MECHANIC SAYING THE NSA BROKE INTO MY CAR AND PUT EQUPMENT INTO MY CAR THAT MAY BE DANGEROUS TO MY LIFE.  I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS OTHER ATTEMPTS ON MY LIFE. I HAVE FILED OVER 3 COMPLAINTS WITH THE US ATTORNEYS OFFICE IN NEWARK N.J.. THE PEOPLE IN THAT OFFICE WHO WORK FOR THE NSA PREVENT ME FROM GETTING HELP. I HAVE FILED OVER 5 COMPLAINTS WITH THE FBI . THE SAME THING HAPPENS, THE PEOPLE WHO ARE ON THE PAYROLL OF THE NSA AT THE FBI PREVENT ME FROM GETTING HELP-.

THE NSA HAS USED A FRONT COMPANY TO BUY THE PANTRY AT THE GALAXY AT 7000 BLVD EAST IN GUTTENBERG. THE OWNERS AND EMPLOYES ARE ALL EMPLOYED BY THE NSA AND USE THE PANTRY TO POISON CIGARETTES AND FOOD.. THE NSA HAS ALSO PUT NSA EMPLOYEES AT BENITOS ITALIAN RESTAURANT AT THE GALAXY LEONADO THE PERSON WHO MAKES THE PIZZA TOLD ME HE WORKS FOR THE NSA AND THAT THEY POISON THE FOOD FOR CERTAIN CLIENTS INCLUDING ME .

THEY HAVE ALSO EMPLOYED THE PHARAMACIST AT GALAXY DRUG STORE I HAVE GPS ON MY COMMERCE DEBIT CARD, MY DRIVERS LICENSE, AND MY CLOTHES.

THE NSA HAS ALL THE DOORMAN AND SECURITY GUARDS IN THE GALAXY APARTMENTS WORKING FOR THEM.  MY TELEPHONE HAS A DELAY ON IT WHEN I CALL SOMEBODY AND WE ARE WATCHING THE SAME PROGRAM I HEAR THE PROGRAM 7 SECONDS BEFORE THEY DO.

THE NSA HAS  FBI AGENTS THAT ARE WORKING  FOR THEM AND STOPPING THIS INFO FROM REACHING THEM.  BADGE NUMBER 1624 THAT WORKS AT 10 WORTH STREET IN NYC . THEY SEEM TO HAVE CERTAIN  PEOPLE FROM THE FBI THAT  ARE ON THE PAYROLE OF THE NSA..THE NSA CONTROLS  THE PHONE LINES AND COMPUTERS. THE NSA HAS MANY SECURITY GUARDS WORKING FOR THEM, AT CNN,CBS,NY TIMES ETC AND PREVENT ME FROM ENTERING THE BUILDINGS. IF WE USE ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES THE MACHINES MUST GIVE A PAPER RECEIPT AND YOU PUT  A COPY  IN THE BOX NEXT TO THE MACHINE, AND AT THE END OF THE NIGHT THEY ADD UP THE PAPER BALLOTS AND COMPARE IT WITH THE ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES. YOU HAVE CHECK AND BALANCES ALL THE WAY UP. NOT JUST PHONING IT IN. THE BALLOTS MUST BE BROUGHT MANUALLY TO THE MAIN OFFICE. Andrea Psoras of New York was on the ticket as the VP. She worked as a financial analyst.

The Boss/Psoras ticket finished 8th out of 10 in New Jersey, with 0.02% of the Garden State vote. It was the only state where they were on the ballot.   

Boss also filed with the FEC in 2012 and 2016, switching from Democratic Party to Independent numerous times. Boss has stated he asked Edward Snowden to be his 2020 running-mate.

Concerning his 2008 running-mate, Boss states in his 2018 campaign webpage for US Congress--

This might be the first ticket I have located comprised of sisters, although I have previously discovered other sibling combination teams. In their home state, the only place where they were on a ballot, they placed 6th out 9 with 0.08% of the popular vote there. Apparently they had recruited only a single Elector. In the event of their national victory there would have been a problem with the Constitution since both candidates were residents of the same state.

The campaign:

Having attempted to gain the Presidency in 1980 and 1984 via the Democratic Party primaries, Lyndon LaRouche was back as an independent in the 1984 general election. As you might recall he ran for President in 1976 under the banner of the U.S. Labor Party.

His running mate for 1984 was Billy M. Davis, an attorney who was more of a true farmer at heart. Davis had been part of the American Agricultural Movement and had run for Governor of Mississippi as a LaRouche Democrat in the 1983 primary. Davis called himself a "mainline Democrat." During the 1984 Democratic primaries Davis was touted as LaRouche's future Secretary of Agriculture.

LaRouche had recently married, moved to Virginia, and lived in an armed fortress complete with camouflaged armed guards since he claimed he had many enemies out to assassinate him.

LaRouche supported the Reagan administration's Strategic Defense Initiative (aka "Star Wars") and proposed expanding use of lasers (they called it "beam technology") for wartime use. Now solidly and openly shifted to the Right wing to the point of being called fascist by critics, LaRouche had become an ardent anti-Communist and accused Walter Mondale of being a Soviet agent. President Reagan was considered a good man who was being given bad information by the "palace guard." LaRouche also proposed high tariffs, more nuclear power plants, and identified himself as anti-abortion.

Both LaRouche and Davis gave urgent warnings concerning the just-around-the-corner collapse of the world monetary system, the final stages of the decimation of U.S. agriculture, war with the Soviet Union and Nicaragua, and the downfall of Western civilization in general. In early September Davis predicted the Soviets would invade and take over West Germany between October 1st through 14th, 1984. Their public statements brought to mind a doomsday cult, but as the decades went on the End Time dates kept moving farther into the future but seldom beyond three years. Those who opposed LaRouche were deemed insane, drug dealers, homosexuals, or Soviet agents. Hence, I suppose, the extreme security at his estate.

VP Davis was quite active in electioneering. He echoed some of LaRouche's conspiracy theories. For example, Davis claimed one reason President Reagan performed so badly in his televised debate with Mondale was due to White House Chief of Staff James Baker deliberately misleading Reagan so that he would "come off as bumbling." Also, the hand of Kissinger was behind everything. Davis told the media, "Mondale is owned by Kissinger, and Reagan is controlled by Kissinger. So you've got a Kissinger and a Kissinger. What kind of a choice is that?" Before the 1984 election LaRouche's anti-Semitism was more apparent, but during this campaign "Kissinger" became sort of a wink-wink code as his organization soft-pedaled this bigoted aspect of their philosophy.

At one point in the campaign NBC TV First Camera broadcasted an unflattering report on LaRouche describing how he ran his organization like a cult and would likely be arrested on some kind of fraud (which in fact happened before the 1988 election). He apparently had made statements about assassinating President Carter. One ADL critic called him "a small time Hitler." LaRouche sued for defamation but to no avail.

LaRouche purchased half hour chunks of television air time to present his case, a remarkable and expensive feat for any third party. You can find some of these today on Youtube and hear his complex assertions from the man himself if you are interested. This would save me the trouble of trying to repeat it here and pretend to make sense out of his complicated conspiracy theories.

On the ballot in just under 20 states and DC, the LaRouche/Davis ticket placed third in Iowa, North Dakota, Texas, and Virginia (the last state by default, there were no other third parties on the ballot). The highest percentages came from: Virginia 0.62%, Iowa 0.47%, North Dakota 0.41%, Colorado 0.36%, Texas 0.27%, Washington 0.25%, Ohio 0.24%, Arkansas and Louisiana 0.21% each.

On a forum for recovering LaRouche followers, one person made the following contribution in 2018: "In the 1980s, we recruited a real nice guy named Billy Davis from the farm movement. My understanding is that we tore his family apart as investments and retirement funds were liquidated for us. He was our VP candidate and was at one time a big deal in our Leesburg Va operation. Eventually, he lost everything and instead of a nice retirement, had to go to work to just eat and live."

McCarthy's running-mate in North Dakota was Karl Gruhn of Mound, Minn. who was an alternate McCarthy Minnesota delegate in 1968. They were on the ballot under the Independent Party label.

Gruhn was one of McCarthy's main individual financial backers in the 1976 campaign.

McCarthy had stated that he wanted to reduce the number of Cabinet positions and consolidate several departments. He named several people he would offer positions in his administration, most of them considered centrists from both major parties: Wally Hickel, Kevin White, Howard Stein, Sam Shoen, Carla Hills, William Coleman, Harold Hughes, William Fulbright, Frank Getlein, Terry Sanford, David Reisman, Delores Tucker, Herbert Reid, and Karl Gruhn. Mr. Gruhn was the only "stand-in" VP to appear on McCarthy's public wish list of potential members of his executive team although no doubt several other of his running-mates would have found places to serve in a McCarthy Presidency.

McCarthy/Gruhn won 0.99% of the vote in North Dakota. Nationally McCarthy won 0.91% of the popular poll.

McCarthy's running-mate in New York was Terence J. Spencer who loved in a mobile home upstate in Bristol. They ran under the Independence Party label but failed to obtain ballot status at the last minute, an official government decision that no doubt helped Jimmy Carter carry the state. Their names had even appeared in sample ballots and stickers had to be produced to cover the McCarthy/Spencer ticket already printed on most ballots. Electors were already selected so in fantasy theory McCarthy could have won in a write-in sweep.

Spencer was quoted as saying the difference between McCarthy's bid and "those of the entrenched parties is that we take very seriously the country's persistent problems, such as unemployment, non-constitutional government and militarism. The other candidates take themselves seriously."

McCarthy/Spencer won 0.07% of the vote in New York as write-ins. Nationally McCarthy won 0.91% of the popular poll.

The Ford-Carter result was very close in New York (Carter 51.87% - Ford 47.45%). Politicos like to point out that pre-election polls indicted if McCarthy had been allowed on the ballot in the Empire State there was strong possibility Ford would have won the state's 41 Electors, and with it the Presidency in 1976.

The campaign:

As it happens so often with radical political movements that are personality-driven, when that personality is no longer around a vicious battle for supremacy takes place to fill the power vacuum. So it was with the American Independent Party when George Wallace returned to the Democratic Party after his unsuccessful third party bid in 1968.

Wallace was rather cagey about whether he would return to the AIP or not in the event he failed to win the Democratic nomination, but an assassination attempt gravely crippling the candidate on May 15, 1972 derailed all of his electioneering plans for that year. Several Wallace loyalists felt the AIP was really a one-man party, while others were ready to forge ahead on a policy-driven agenda.

Where the 1968 version of AIP had a populist and segregationist regional appeal in the South, the 1972 version reflected the fact that the ticket was occupied by John Birchers and their message played well in the Far West. But not all was rosey in the Party. Some of the disgruntled Ohio AIP delegates went home and formed their own ticket of Edward Wallace and Robert B. Mess.

John G. Schmitz outpolled segregationist Lester Maddox and fellow John Birch Society member and author Tom Anderson for the AIP Presidential nomination. Anderson became the running mate. Schmitz and Anderson were both well known in the art of sharp-tongued wisecracks.

Their campaign slogan: "When you're out of Schmitz, you're out of gear" was a takeoff on the well-known ad jingle at the time, "When you're out of Schlitz, you're out of beer."

To describe Schmitz as an ultra-conservative would be putting it mildly. In 2004 Schmitz was selected as the third most conservative member of the House and Senate between 1937-2002, behind only Ron Paul and Larry McDonald. Eventually he grew too extreme for even the John Birch Society and was expelled from the organization. A decade later the scandals of his personal life caught up to him, ending his political career. Tom Anderson would run for President in 1976 from the splinter American Party.

The Schmitz/Anderson ticket placed third nationally. Although not nearly as successful as George Wallace was in 1968, they did have some impressive results, actually placing second in a few counties. They were on the ballot in over 30 states. Strongest vote percentages: Idaho 9.3%, Alaska 7.25%, Utah 5.97%, Oregon 4.98%, Louisiana 4.95%, Montana 4.23%, Washington 4.00%, Arizona 3.25%, California 2.78%.

The National Party then nominated 72-year old George Wilson, a newsstand and drugstore operator in Vineland, NJ as their nominee. Wilson had been connected with the People's Party and was a member of Coxey's Army in 1894. 62-year old J.A. Parker of Blytheville, Penn. was picked as his running mate.

Wilson said he would only accept the nomination on the condition the National Party merged with the Farmer-Labor (which was home to Jacob Coxey in 1932) and Liberty parties. Zahnd, who ran his party with an iron fist, would have none of that, so Wilson was out. As Fate would have it, the National Party and Liberty Party would indeed merge on the Indiana ballot a month or two later.

With time getting short, Zahnd himself stepped up to the nomination at some point in late August or early September. Florence Garvin of Rhode Island was selected as his running mate.

Indiana was the only state where the Zahnd/Garvin could be found on a ballot.

The campaign (1936):

In 1936 the Zahnd/Garvin ticket ran again, this time under the banner of the National Greenback Party. They were not on the ballot in any states.
