Edward Emery Leamer

Edward Emery Leamer, May 24, 1944 (La Crosse, Wis.) -

VP candidate for Kotlikoff for President (aka Non Affiliated aka Independent aka It's Our Children aka Unaffiliated) (2016)

Running mate with nominee: Laurence Jacob Kotlikoff (b. 1951)
Popular vote: 3,574 (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign:

Boston-based economist Laurence Kotlikoff filed with the FEC on May 11, 2016 on his second quest for the US Presidency. In 2012 he had attempted to gain the nomination of the ill-fated Americans Elect project and was also a contender for the Reform Party nomination. In 2016 he ran as an independent under the Kotlikoff for President banner and chose fellow economist Ed Leamer as his VP.

Kotlikoff described his history with Leamer--

I first met Ed in 1973 when I started graduate school in economics at Harvard where Ed was serving as a young professor. Even though he was a professor and I was a student, we instantly became friends and have remained extremely close friends over the years. In 1975, Ed left Harvard for UCLA. I joined him there as a post doctoral fellow in 1977. I headed to Yale in 1980, but the three years with Ed were an exceptional education in how to pose and answer economic questions. Ed and I have spent the intervening years discussing economic policy problems and solutions. We are of one mind on our domestic problems and foreign policy challenges and how to address them. This includes the paramount importance of fixing our institutions from the ground up and placing our children's welfare at the center of all policy discussions.

Other than Leamer as VP, Kotlikoff's dream team would have raided the US Senate in several cases. His first picks included--

Sec. of Defense: John McCain or Lindsay Graham
Sec. of State: Robert Gates or Dennis Ross
CIA Director: Diane Feinstein
Sec. of Homeland Security: Rob Portman
Director of OMB: John Kasich
Sec. of Health and Human Service: Bernie Sanders
Sec. of Commerce: Mitt Romney or Bill Gates or Michael Bloomberg
Sec. of Interior: Marco Rubio
Sec. of Agriculture: John Thune
Sec. of HUD: Barbara Boxer
Sec. of Transportation: Kelly Ayotte

For more information on this campaign I would direct the reader to my interview with Dr. Leamer from nearly two years ago--

The ticket made the ballot in Colorado (0.01%) and Louisiana (0.05%) and were registered write-ins in at least 26 states with the potential of well over 270 Electoral College votes. Interestingly, nearly one third of their votes came from write-ins in Texas.

VP candidate for Independent (aka No Party Affiliation aka Modern Whig Party) (2012)

Running mate with nominee: Terrance James O'Hara (b. 1952)
Popular vote: 1 (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign:

Every now and then I run across Presidential nominees who deliberately do not select a Vice Presidential running-mate and if I find their reasons to be of interest I'll include them here. In 1940 Gracie Allen of the Surprise Party did not have a Vice-President because her administration would not abide any vice. Jean Pierre, an independent in 1972, said she considered a VP position to be "unnecessary" and refused to name a running-mate.

Jim Berg and Tim Nyberg, brothers-in-law in Minnesota, are humorists, authors, and performers who have operated under the name of The Duct Tape Guys since 1993. In four consecutive elections, 1996-2008, they ran for President as a marketing gimmick. Their 1996 run was apparently sort of under the radar compared to their later efforts from what I can glean. It was their stated intention to share the Presidency, "The Office of President is too big a position for any one person, therefore, Jim and Tim will share the Presidency. The Vice President really doesn't do that much anyway, and we can use the extra office to warehouse extra duct tape rolls."

Robert Bryant Winn, who ran for President 1984, 1988, 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008 was quite pointed in not including a running-mate.

In 2012 a gentleman named Charles Marvin Green Jr. (aka Angry Grandpa) jumped into the race as an Independent and declared, "Who's gonna be my Vice-President? Hell, I don't need one!!! I'll do it all by my Goddamn self!!! Vote for Grandpa!!! Vote for Grandpa!!!"

Green was not the only one that year to disdain a running-mate. Terrance James "T.J." O'Hara a corporate turnaround specialist from Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. filed with the FEC for President Nov. 30, 2011 with party given as "none."

Perhaps anticipating the results of the 2016 election, O'Hara said in his campaign announcement, "We live in an age when politicians have become celebrities and celebrities have become politicians. The Presidency shouldn't be treated as if it were a personal or political trophy. Instead, it should be recognized for what it is: the ultimate position of civil service. I appreciate that distinction and will bring the commitment, respect, and depth of leadership experience it deserves."

O'Hara had apparently attempted to gain the nomination of the ill-fated Americans Elect project. He was endorsed or nominated (sources differ) by the Modern Whig Party. His platform was fairly centrist ("Extreme views lead to extreme failures"), but his real focus was on form rather than content. He was offering to find an alternative to party politics and have public policy achieved by what he viewed as rational, collaborative processes.

On Oct. 4, 2012, O'Hara's campaign issued the following press release--

Presidential candidate, T.J. O'Hara, announces his unique choice for V.P.

Washington, D.C.,  (PRBuzz.com) October 8, 2012 -- Leading independent Presidential candidate, T.J. O'Hara, has made history again. Last month, he became the first Presidential candidate to earn the endorsement of the Modern Whig Party since 1852. Now, he is actually going to allow the Constitution to decide who his Vice President will be if he is elected."It's perfectly consistent with my approach," O'Hara said. "One of the fundamental purposes of my campaign is to create a more informed electorate, and most people are unaware of the actual process that determines who serves as President and Vice President."

O'Hara continued, "The Twelfth Amendment states that there shall be two separate ballots:  one for President and one for Vice President.  Then, without getting too technical, the electors of each state cast a vote for each specific office.  The Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates with the greatest number of votes, assuming that each represents a majority of the appointed electors, are declared President and Vice President , respectively."

He is correct. With respect to Vice President,  Amendment XII states: "The person having the greatest number of votes as Vice-President, shall be the Vice-President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed..." This Amendment was ratified in 1804. Prior to that time, all candidates essentially ran for President. The candidate who received the greatest number of votes (with a majority) became President, and the candidate with the second highest number of votes became Vice President.

O'Hara said, "Most citizens are unaware of the actual process. They have been conditioned to believe that they have to vote for a party ticket that pairs Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates of the same party. That simply isn't true. You can vote for whomever you choose for President and Vice President regardless of party affiliation. The Democrats and Republicans would just prefer that you didn't know that."

When asked why he chose not to follow tradition and name a Vice Presidential running mate, O'Hara stated, "Why should I? I'm totally non-partisan. It makes no difference to me whether my Vice President is an independent, a Democrat, a Republican, or a member of any other party. I know that I ultimately have to demonstrate the ability to work with elected officials of all persuasions. Part of the problem in Washington, D.C., is that a party President is tied to his or her party and inherently treats anyone outside of that party as an opponent. That has to change. So, I'm comfortable accepting whoever the Constitution determines should be my Vice President."

O'Hara's candidacy has been distinguished by its character and logic.  Once again, he proves it's hard to argue with the Constitution.

O'Hara was a registered write-in in at least four states: Idaho, Maryland, Montana, and Washington. Maryland reported a single vote.

"My mother and father were first generation Americans. My maternal grandparents came to this country from Italy, and my paternal grandparents came from Ireland. My mother was Protestant, and my father was Catholic; and my mother was a Democrat, and my father was a Republican. If that isn’t diversity, I don’t know what is."--T.J. O'Hara.

Harry Valentine Bertram

Harry Valentine Bertram, December 12, 1959 (Wheeling, W. Va.) -

VP candidate for American Third Position (aka Independent) (2012)

Running mate with nominee: Merlin Lloyd Miller (b. 1956)
Popular vote: 957 (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign:

The American Third Position Party (or A3P) was created in 2009 as a political venue for white nationalism. Historically the "third position" in 20th century Europe meant a rejection of Marxism and of mainstream traditional democracy capitalism while finding a third alternative, i.e. fascism.

The founders of the group included those with close ties to skinheads, Nazis, the KKK, Holocaust deniers, anti-Semites, League of American Patriots, and other white supremacist groups. In January 2012 the A3P nominated Merlin Miller for US President, described by the Southern Poverty Law Center as "an independent filmmaker and military veteran who has expressed dislike for interracial marriage and claimed that Hollywood is under 'Jewish-Zionist control.' He has written for the Holocaust-denying Barnes Review and the white nationalist Occidental Observer."

In Feb. 2012 the group Anonymous hacked into the A3P website. They uncovered working connections between the Party and Ron Paul, such as fundraising and organizing events. The documents revealed A3P leaders felt that Paul's mostly white, male, anti-government following would be fertile ground for recruitment.

In Sept. 2012 Miller met former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and discussed the "Zionist-controlled media" in the US. According to Salon, Miller at that meeting "stated that he believes 9/11 was a Mossad-orchestrated event carried out with 'considerable inside help.'"

During the campaign Miller had been one of the candidates attempting to gain the nomination in the ill-fated Americans Elect project.

Miller's issues included--

-Eliminating the Federal Reserve
-Pulling out of NAFTA, GATT, and WTO
-Imposing strict tariffs
-"Tax dollars are aggressively collected from our people and funneled to so-called minorities, criminals, and persons unwilling to work. We will cut all programs that provide an incentive for people to be anything other than hard-working and productive."
-"The same schools that once taught our children the knowledge, skills, culture, and traditions necessary to maintain and enhance our nation are now controlled by social and cultural Marxists ...  We encourage a full curriculum of American History be taught. This will instill in our young people knowledge of and pride in the history, cultures and heritage of the pioneers of the U.S., and not the poisonous politically correct nonsense being fed to our children today."
-"Unfortunately, many white American men and women have misplaced their priorities: Individualism and hyper-materialism have become more important than family and community. Millions of our youth have been coerced into destructive Marxist politically correct philosophy through television, radio and print media. The exclusive groups that dominate these mass media outlets have methodically imposed a degenerate influence on our people. We must return to a strengthened family unit as the norm for society. We support traditional marriage. We must revitalize the sense of community in the U.S. that we had shared for two hundred years."

-Withdraw from the UN and NATO.
-Close military bases overseas.
-"Immigration. Enough is enough.

During the 1960’s, our immigration system was transformed to favor persons from Third World countries incapable of assimilating into any European homeland. If current demographic trends continue, our people will become a minority in America within only a few decades. We cannot let our children grow up in a nation that is fast becoming the Brazil of the Northern Hemisphere. The vast majority of immigrants, both legal and illegal, come from nations in Latin America, Asia and Africa lacking in education, science, art, law, governance or industrial achievements in any way comparable to ours. Numerous studies have confirmed that there is no net economic benefit to the U.S. economy from Third World immigration due to the added costs of education, infrastructure, health care, welfare programs and law enforcement.

We will deport all illegal and criminal aliens.
We will impose massive penalties for employing or assisting them.
We will use the U.S. military for border security and build an impenetrable southern fence.
We will immediately put an indefinite moratorium on all immigration.
We will provide immigrants and their children who have become citizens since 1965 with generous grants to assist their voluntary return to their respective countries of origin.
We will also eliminate birthright citizenship, chain migration and asylum."
-"A nation’s character is determined by its people – and racial demographics are a primary determinant. America’s founding fathers were European derived and this great country was settled and built through their efforts and that of their progeny. Less than 50 years ago our nation was still 90% White, with approximately 10% black, and a very small representation of other races. Since then we have been undermined by internationalists seeking to destroy the 'liberty, sovereignty, and identity' of America.

These changes have not led to utopia, as crime and discord have resulted, as well as our economic decline. American values, heritage, and even language are under massive assault and we are quickly degenerating from a predominantly White, Christian nation — which led the world by its positive example — to a third world “tower of Babel”. At our current rate of demographic change, an American born in 1965 (part of the 90% majority) will die at the modest age of 77, as a minority in their own country!

This is bizarre and not happening by accident. During the 20th century, socialist global elites hijacked American institutions and media, and began indoctrinating our people into accepting “cultural Marxism” and “political correctness” — complete with multiculturalism, miscegenation, radical feminism and unnatural characterizations. White people were made to feel “guilty” for past wrongs, real or imagined, and have been ruthlessly attacked for showing any pride in their race, traditions, or heritage.

A3P stands to protect White American interests, as no other political party has shown interest in doing. This does not make us racist, but protective of our rights – which every other race or group is encouraged and praised for doing. Discriminatory “affirmative action” programs and the invasion of illegal immigrants adversely affect the welfare of all Americans, but especially the White majority.

We hold no animosity to other races, languages, religions, or heritages — in fact, we respect their differences. Indeed, America’s Black citizens have also suffered from these vast changes in the traditional fabric of American society, as jobs have been taken by illegal immigrants, and drug use and crime have become epidemic.

The goal of A3P is therefore to restore the legitimacy of White identity and expressions of White interests. We want to stop the divisive, orchestrated destruction of America and restore her to greatness."
-"The American Third Position Party believes that government policy in the United States discriminates against white Americans, the majority population, and that white Americans need their own political party to fight this discrimination."

Miller had two running-mates, Virginia Abernethy of Tennessee and Harry Bertram of West Virginia. Abernethy seems to have been the official VP while Bertram was a stand-in.

At the same time Bertram was in the VP slot, he was also a A3P candidate for the West Virginia House of Delegates. In addition to A3P, Bertram seems to have been deeply involved with the American Nationalist Union, later called the American Freedom Union, and was their candidate for the State House in 2018 according to his ballot listing. If anything, Bertram was even more outspoken and visceral in his white nationalism than Miller.

The SPLC described Bertram's 2012 legislative run--

He is running as a candidate of the American Third Position (A3P), a political party originally founded by racist skinheads in southern California in 2009 whose goals include deporting immigrants and placing the U.S. under white rule. The group’s mission statement claims that the U.S. government discriminates against white Americans and warns that whites will soon become a minority. In 2010, the group’s chairman, William Daniel Johnson, told the white nationalist “Political Cesspool” radio show that the foundation of the party is the “racial nationalist movement.” Nevertheless, Bertram dismisses the idea that the A3P is a racist party, insisting instead that it is merely “nationalist.” That’s a noteworthy claim, given that Bertram is listed as a “senior moderator” on WhiteNewsNow, a website run by Jamie Kelso, a longtime racist activist and former member of the neo-Nazi National Alliance. In addition, during his run for governor, Bertram released a television campaign ad in which he called himself “the voice for white American issues.” A3P chief Johnson’s proposed radio ad for Bertram — the text of which included, racist websites reported, “Vote Harry Bertram for Governor because we must secure a future for White America and our children” — was rejected by the West Virginia station he approached.

Miller's total popular vote was 2,713. The Miller/Abernethy ticket received the lion's share of the vote, 1,739, where they were on the ballot in Tennessee finishing 7th out of 7 (0.07%). They were also registered write-ins in Washington, which did not report vote totals for that category. The Miller/Bertram ticket could be found on the ballot in New Jersey (664) and Colorado (267) and were write-ins in Maryland (26). Miller was not listed with a running-mate as a write-in in New York (6) and West Virginia (11).

Bertram finished 11th out of the 11 candidates for that 2012 West Virginia House of Delegates election with 0.88% of the vote.

In Feb. 2013 the A3P changed their name to the American Freedom Party.

Looks like Miller made another try in 2016 under the newly formed American Eagle Party but failed to attain ballot status in any state. Meanwhile in that year, the American Freedom Party did nominate a ticket, but both individuals resigned their positions. The Party apparently experienced a civil war over the issue of whether or not to support Donald Trump.

Miller had two running-mates, Virginia Abernethy of Tennessee and Harry Bertram of West Virginia. Abernethy seems to have been the official VP while Bertram was a stand-in.

The 78-year old Abernethy, a self-described "ethnic separatist" with a Ph.D. from Harvard who had last worked as a professor at Vanderbilt, added some academic dressing to the ticket.

The Southern Poverty Law Center began their profile of Abernethy with--

As a professor emeritus of psychiatry and anthropology at Vanderbilt University, Virginia Abernethy pushes repugnant, race-based politics from behind an academic veneer. She has a long history of alliances with groups such as the racist political party American Third Position (renamed the American Freedom Party in 2013), and the white nationalist Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC). In addition, she was chairwoman in 2001 of the advisory board pushing Arizona's anti-immigrant Proposition 200, aka Protect Arizona Now.

The Anti-Defamation League described her as well--

Abernethy’s white supremacist views and ties to white supremacist organizations are well known. In the 2012 Presidential elections, Abernethy ran as a vice-presidential candidate for the white supremacist political party, American Third Position (A3P). Abernethy serves on the editorial advisory board of the white supremacist publication Occidental Quarterly, edited by anti-Semitic professor Kevin MacDonald.  Abernethy has also addressed a white supremacist organization, the Council of Conservative Citizens (CofCC), on a number of occasions. She has referred to herself as an “ethnic separatist.” In a 2012 interview with The Tennessean, Abernethy stated, “Separatism says, ‘Birds of a feather flock together.’ I say, ‘Let them.’ What I see is rampant racial discrimination against European-Americans. And I am not in favor of discrimination.”

It seemed that in 2012 Miller and Abernethy were both residents of Tennessee, and being from the same state would have posed a Constitutional problem in the event of their victory on Election Day.

Miller's total popular vote was 2,713. The Miller/Abernethy ticket received the lion's share of the vote, 1,739, where they were on the ballot in Tennessee finishing 7th out of 7 (0.07%). In Feb. 2013 the A3P changed their name to the American Freedom Party, not to be confused with Larry Brant Sargeant's Party of the same name in the 1976 election.

Looks like Miller made another try in 2016 under the newly formed American Eagle Party but failed to attain ballot status in any state. Cindy Lee Miller Sheehan

Cindy Lee Miller Sheehan, July 10, 1957 (Inglewood, Calif.) -

VP candidate for Peace and Freedom Party (aka Americans Elect aka Independent) (2012)

Running mate with nominee: Roseanne Cherrie Barr (b. 1952)
Popular vote: 67,477 (0.05%)
Electoral vote: 0/538

The campaign:

In late Jan. 2012 Roseanne Barr filed with the FEC for President as a candidate of the Green Party. A few months earlier the sitcom star had announced her intention to run while a guest on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. "I'm totally serious," Barr said, "'Cause I want to be part of the debates, because I want to represent the tax payer. In fact, I'm choosing the tax payers as my vice president ... I'm not for either party because they both suck and they're both a bunch of criminals ... So I made up my own party. It's the Green Tea Party."

Barr entered the Green Party primaries but lost the nomination to Jill Stein. However, Barr was able to parlay that momentum into gaining the Presidential nomination of the Peace and Freedom Party. Her running-mate was a PFP member, antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan.

Sheehan had become a national figure after her son Casey was killed in action in Iraq on Apr. 4, 2004 while serving in the US Army. The event radicalized Sheehan who staged a series of dramatic events protesting at first the Bush, then later the Obama administration military policies. Sheehan had progressively moved to the Left in the course of her political journey, starting as a California Democrat, then running against Nancy Pelosi in 2008 as an Independent, Sheehan found a home with the Peace and Freedom Party in 2010. Although she has sort of fallen off the radar in recent years, in 2012 Cindy Sheehan was a frequent name in the headlines. A faction of the Socialist Party USA had approached Sheehan to run as their VP, but the internal SPUSA politics prevented that from happening.

The Barr/Sheehan team did not last long. Living on her macadamia nut farm in Hawaii, Barr had an idea of running the campaign strictly online, admitting that she hated "to be around people or touch them," and "that there's going to be weirdos there that want to kill me."

Some of Barr's activities and statements as a PFP nominee made the Party uncomfortable and for sure Barr herself candidly acknowledged a long history of challenges with mental illness. It became evident she embraced a few unfounded conspiracy theories (e.g. she spoke at the The Consciousness Beyond Chemtrails Conference during the campaign) and also was one of the early Presidential candidates to find herself in trouble over messages she created on Twitter, an example being comments she wrote that resulted in charges that she was transphobic.

A month into the campaign, Sheehan posted this on her blog Cindy Sheehan's Soapbox--

No Longer on Campaign. Formal announcement

For personal and health reasons, I regret that I have to pull out of active participation in the Barr/Sheehan 2012 campaign. I strongly believe in the Platform as written, and the mission statement of the Peace and Freedom Party, and hope to continue my activism when my health improves. As to the personal reasons, Candidate Barr and I have irreconcilable differences on how best to serve the Peace and Freedom Party. I believe between my health issues and the disparity of our Political approach; both the Campaign, Ms Barr and the Party would be better served by my resignation. I wish nothing but good things for the Party and campaign.

UPDATE I: APPARENTLY, IT IS TOO LATE ACCORDING TO STATE POLICIES FOR ME TO RESIGN FROM THE TICKET,  BUT I AM WITHDRAWING ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN CAMPAIGNING. SO, I WILL STILL BE THE VP CHOICE ON BALLOTS (CINDY)

On Feb. 12, 2015, Sheehan elaborated a bit more on the subject in hindsight, including the following passages--

The few weeks that I was her running mate were devastating for me. I had known Roseanne for years before that star-crossed collaboration and I considered her a friend.

Roseanne was flawed, of course, as are we all. But I saw a person who I truly believed was committed to the same principles that I was, but Twitter is not Barr’s friend and she started to tweet some things that were 180 degrees from the platform of the party and my own personal platform, such as: “If people go on welfare, birth control should be mandatory.”

Side note: I also disagreed that our entire campaign should be by tweet, especially ones that were so contrary to what we, as a party, stand for.

Then some people have defended her most recent foray into outrageousness by saying exactly that, “She is famous for saying outrageous things.” Well, so am I, but I only consider what I say outrageous in the context of Imperial Capitalism like, “war of aggression is always wrong.”

The PFP actually went beyond the borders of California for the first time in awhile. The Barr/Sheehan ticket placed 6th nationally. They were on the ballot in three states: California (0.41%), Colorado (0.20%), and Florida (0.10%) as well as write-ins in 11 more states.

Barr would go on to promote numerous spurious conspiracy theories and then support Trumpism by the 2016 election.

Election history:
2008 - US House of Representatives (Calif.) (Independent) - defeated
2014 - Governor of California (Peace and Freedom Party) - primary - defeated

Other occupations: youth minister, antiwar activist, author, radio host

Notes:
Winner of the 2008 election was Nancy Pelosi.
2014 opponents included Jerry Brown (winner) and Luis J. Rodriguez.
I was not a viewer of her 1980s TV show, but thought Barr was great in She-Devil (1989)
