The campaign:

I'll attempt to not get bogged down in the minutiae of Nazi factional and personality politics here.

John Taylor Bowles, a retired federal worker, was the Presidential nominee of the National Socialist Movement. His campaign headquarters was in an establishment called The Redneck Shop in Laurens, SC, which included KKK, Nazi, and Confederate paraphernalia in their inventory.

Bowles first running-mate was William "Wild Bill" Hoff, but as the Presidential candidate explained in an interview: "I had a Vice-Presidential candidate when the campaign officially began on December 7, 2006; but, unfortunately he was killed in a mysterious automobile accident 10 hours later. His name was William (Wild Bill) and he served in the USA military and was decorated with over 15 medals. Early in his political life, Mr. Hoff served as Grand Dragon for the Ku Klux Klan in New York and ran for the Senate in New York."

The Southern Poverty Law Center commented on this accident: "In December 2006, 'Wild' Bill Hoff, one of the NSM's oldest and best-known members and a 'colonel' in the group, died in a car accident at the age of 71. This was particularly notable because Hoff's anti-racist brother decided four months after the death to reveal a remarkable fact — Hoff, along with other members of his family, had black ancestors, a dreadful secret in the world of neo-Nazism."

The fate of Bowles' second running-mate foreshadowed the future: "My second choice for Vice-President was Kris Johnson; but, he was pressured to drop out because the NSM Commander wanted to sabotage my campaign. I will announce my third vice-presidential running mate choice on my campaign website (Bowlesforpresident.com) probably in March 2008. My running mate will be, of course, a National Socialist."

The third running-mate was Matthew Ramsey, also known under the alias of "Jim Ramm." Both Bowles and Ramsey either quit or had been expelled (sources differ) from NSM in Oct. 2007. It is somewhat unusual for a political group to lose their Presidential nominee during an election year. Rather than quit the campaign, Bowles formed the National Socialist Order of America and continued to electioneer, just under a new banner.

Ramsey was raised in northeast Washington State but by the mid-1990s he was living north of Seattle in Snohomish County, where he ran a public-access TV program devoted to the militia movement. It is thought this is where he invented the stage name of "Jim Ramm." Within a few years he became a very public figure with the NSM, contributing his computer and video skills. He was actually quite active in my neck of the woods and I recall his copious Youtube videos which included himself giving addresses in full uniform while attempting to imitate Hitler's unhinged full-throated speaking style. Those videos have since been deleted. Ramsey and his group were called "Hollywood Nazis" by many due to their costumes.

In 2006 Ramsey released a violent video game called ZOG's Nightmare, "ZOG" being an acronym for the conspiracy theory among white nationalists that a "Zionist-occupied government" exists.

Being a fellow who moved around a lot, Ramsey lived in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon for a spell and while there garnered some press as the supposed leader of an alleged group called the Tualatin Valley Skins. I used the terms "supposed" and "alleged" because when one reporter fact checked the background information Ramsey had provided about himself, it all turned out to be lies. His own mother contradicted him, and elsewhere another relative expressed dismay over how his nice, quiet, shy kin had transformed into a ranting Nazi.

Ramsey's true motives for his political activities became the source of conjecture among anti-fascists and Nazis alike. He tried to make sure his face was always covered with sunglasses during the 2008 campaign and was reportedly upset whenever a news photo of him without disguise was published.

Meanwhile, Bowles suffered a heart attack circa July 2008 which pretty much ended the campaign as well as his embryonic political party. Shortly after the election he joined the American Nazi Party. It is telling that when he vouched for Ramsey to join as well the ANP expressed some serious doubts over accepting "Jim Ramm." But it didn't matter, Ramsey was making moves to disappear anyway.

By 2009 Ramsey was in Michigan. Some sources have him joining the National Socialist American Labor Party which apparently turned out to be another stormy situation. In 2010 Ramsey made a statement that he was "retired" from Nazi politics and included, "Why retire? Don't get me wrong, I still deeply loathe non-whites but have very little free time available for posting on the internet, going to rallies or other activities. The little free time I have is now consumed with various day to day responsibilities." And with that Matthew Ramsey virtually vanished from the political radar.

The campaign (2000):

Given the fact that Jackson Kirk Grimes once had a budding career as an off-Broadway actor, it might be easy to assume his United Fascist Union complete with theatrical costumes was a put on. But whenever that suggestion was made, Grimes and his followers would reply with angry profanity-laden denials and be quite definite that the UFU was a totally serious endeavor.

The information regarding Grimes and his organization is conflicting and murky, but I'll do my best here to be accurate as I understand the data.

Born in Tampa, Fla., Grimes dropped out of high school in Indiana, wandered a bit and joined the Army. He said during his 1968-1972 stint he served in Vietnam. He seems to have bounced around in various jobs after re-entering civilian life. Grimes said he was, as mentioned above, an actor for a time, a stockbroker, as well as a sous chef in Chicago. He acquired his GED in 1991 in Ohio.

His political life is alleged to have begun when he was 17 or so as a "Storm Trooper" for the uber-obscure Fascist Freedom Front from 1967-1975, which means he was a  member during his entire Army career.

According to his own Facebook biography, Grimes was a Former Grand Dragon at Southern Knights of the Ku Klux Klan 1981-1985, "Former dictator" at Aryan Racial Loyalist Party 1989-1998, and Former Director and CEO at United Fascist Union 1998-2008.

In 1994 the Wilkes-Barre City Council (Penn.) denounced Grimes' distribution of racist flyers attempting to recruit members for the Aryan Racial Loyalist Party.

The United Fascist Union appears to have been created in the mid-1990s. One account has it that it was actually just a name change from the Aryan Racial Loyalist Party. Grimes himself described how the United Fascist Union was something of a Trojan horse: "All of us, the leadership of the U.F.U., had either come from the American Nazi Party or the Ku Klux Klan, so the non-racial Fascist U. was our attempt to do an end run around the Jewish system. We hoped our party would become the central organ of state through an election, then we could introduce whatever kind of laws were deemed necessary to restore balance and harmony in America." 

By 1997 Grimes had managed to elbow his way in the media to be an outspoken proponent for white supremacy. Complete with a dark SS-type uniform, he appeared on Jerry Springer's TV show and stated amid the loud jeers of the audience, "I believe it is my destiny to become the dictator of America and create a new Roman Empire based upon white purity." He also told Springer that Nostradamus predicted a Grimes dictatorship between 1999 and 2004.

Using Imperial Rome as his model, Grimes expressed admiration for Benito Mussolini and Saddam Hussein. The concepts of democracy, Christianity, and capitalism had to be swept aside for Grimes' version of his own New World Order.

Grimes' former membership in the KKK and Aryan Racial Loyalist Party make the following statement appear somewhat disingenuous, but Hitler supposedly did not make the grade with the UFU:

"Hitler was a Nazi. Hitler pretended to be a Fascist to capitalize on Benito Mussolini's popularity when he started the National Socialist German Workers' Party, but was NOT a Fascist EVER! More like a Judas goat hung around Il Duce's neck like a millstone with his anti-Semitic insanity. In Fascist Italy under Benito Mussolini and in Iraq under Saddam Hussein, the governments actually protected the Jews from anti-Semitic elements. Fascists did not persecute anybody because of race or religion, and the Nazi's did."

The VP on this ticket was Eduardo Rios, who seems to have been third in command of the UFU at the time. Other than occasionally weighing in on some online forum, he was not a major presence in the 2000 campaign.

The Grimes/Rios ticket were not registered as write-ins in any state and hence no votes were reported.

The campaign (2004):

Apparently Grimes had asked his aide Sally Parker to run as his VP in 2004, but she declined. So Rios was back for a second round.

The Sept. 11, 2001 World Trade Center/Pentagon/United Airlines Flight 93 terrorist attack had become fodder for conspiracy theorists and the "Truther" community took shape. These were people on both sides of the political spectrum who did not accept the mainstream news coverage of the event and felt that the attacks were an orchestrated inside job. Grimes was definitely in the Truther camp:

 ... this may be another reason for the phony terrorist attacks in the fall of 2001; it firmed up the foundations of their rotten, old republic and gave something that should have died decades ago an illusion of vitality.  Do you begin to see a common thread running throughout this dialogue, when it comes to the machinations of Washington-based monster?  The term smoke, mirrors, & lies apply.  Parties are allowed to field candidates that have no hope of ever winning, to make the masses believe that they live in a democratic country.  Rigging elections to put a retarded, drug-addicted, skirt-chasing, deserter like baby Bush in office because he's too stupid, too cowardly, and has too much dirty laundry to ever say no to the puppet-masters.  The fictional terrorist attacks were staged to fool the populace, so they could sneak Orwellian legislation under the public radar that is designed to deprive the people of every liberty and right that they have now without the masses ever realizing what is being done to them. Stone by stone and brick by brick, Bush and Co. are transforming America into one big Stalinist gulag where the public will be locked down, bolted into their cells, and under constant surveillance.

Grimes had added a Roman centurion helmet to his wardrobe, which he wore sideways. He opposed all Homeland Security measures. Also in his platform was drug legalization, repealing gun controls, being pro-choice, eliminating Affirmative Action, and he supported increasing the budget for education and the military.

"I believe it is my destiny to become President," Grimes declared on his website. "The stars and planets say it is time for the United Fascist Union to rule America, so that Pagan Rome can be back in the Physical World once more. It was written in the stars from the dawn of creation that Jack Grimes would become president."

Rios was once again not a prominent factor in the campaign, but I did find this interesting post he made in a forum shortly before the election:

As the Japanese have made hentia anime like "Outlaw Star" and "The Extreme Ghostbusters", that have frontal nudity in some episodes, for several years now, I wonder why the Americans are so hung up on putting porno on TV and limit it to only pay stations like Stars and H.B.O.? The Japanese aren't the only people who allow nudity to go on during prime time programming. I went to France two years ago on a business trip, when I was in my hotel room one night looking at television I happened to see an ad for butter being shown with nudists sitting round a picnic table.

I am pondering when the Americans are going to catch up with the rest of the world and allow nudity on TV? I'd also like to know when they're going to quit the idiocy of a legal drinking age and preventing teens from buying tobacco products.

Director Grimes, thinks we ought abolish all moral and blue laws in this country, also do away with a drinking age restriction and allow anyone to buy cigars and cigarrettes at any age. He belives we should allow pornography on network TV and if publishers wish to put naked ladies in the daily newspapers as they do in the U.K. The United Fascist Union also promotes a "NO MORAL LAWS POLICY" as the state can NOT be allowed to dictate personal habits, therefore we support legalizing prostitution and gay mariages.

We think it was the moral habits of the Babylonians and Romans that made their civilizations great as libertinism makes the public happy and content. We think this is what our late, lamented Founder Benito Mussolini and our beloved Saddam Hussien would want us to do as they said we should embrace Babylon and revive the empire of the Romans. So, if you want America to achieve real greatness again, with happy, health, content citizens VOTE FASCIST 2004! Elect Jackson Grimes U.S. President 04!

Once again the Grimes/Rios ticket failed to be certified as write-ins in any state and once again no votes were reported.

Rios apparently fell from the UFU radar after the 2004 election. In an interview with Mike Pursely for his 2008 run, Grimes said, " ... Mr. Rios, who was my running mate the last two times, is unavailable. We've lost touch with him to be honest with you and we don't know where Eduardo Rios is if he's interested ... he seems to have quit on us."

The UFU evidently evaporated after the 2008 election, but Grimes continued to make hateful public statements. He displayed himself as an outspoken slur-slinging obscenity-spewing racist on his Twitter account and endorsed Trump in 2016. Here's a mild example of Grimes' tweets:

The campaign:

The America First Party was reanimated in a last gasp after decades of not having a national ticket. Right wing figures A.J. Barker and Ed Fields, who had ties to the Klu Klux Klan, Liberty Lobby, David Duke's version of the Populist Party, Holocaust deniers, etc., cobbled together a Presidential campaign venue for Ralph Forbes. Forbes, of London, Ark., had at one time been an officer in the American Nazi Party and had served as one of David Duke's campaign managers. He was also part of the Christian Identity Movement.

Forbes, who called himself "Justice" Forbes, although the origin of that title is unclear, was a white supremacist who believed all African Americans should be deported to Africa. He once attempted to sue the Arkansas Dept. of Education, the National Education Association, the Russellville School District, the Church of Satan and Satan on behalf of himself and Jesus on the grounds they allowed school children to celebrate Halloween.

Forbes' running-mate was a retired US Air Force gentleman living in Reno, Nev. who was born under the name Charles F. Anderson but shortly after his wife died he legally changed it in 1987 to Pro-Life Andy Charles Frederick Anderson, but he became known to the press as Pro-Life Anderson. His friends called him Andy. He had been active in opposing the ERA and then abortion since at least the late 1970s.

Self-described as a "publicity agent for the good Lord," while wearing a large white cowboy hat with a black suit and red vest, Anderson's car and person were generally festooned with prominent signage declaring his energetic opposition to abortion. Instead of writing letters to the editor as a usual method of voicing his opinion in those pre-Internet days, he took out long-winded classified and even occasional densely worded display ads as his political columns.

Anderson's cars were rolling billboards frequently with gory tableaux on display on the roof and/or hood-- twice his cars were the victims of arson in Reno and in Savannah, Ga. where he later moved his car was stolen. His basement was firebombed. In 1990, while running for Lt. Governor, Anderson burst into a Reno radio station sound booth and punched a broadcaster who was making humanist remarks. The backs of his hands had tattoos declaring "God is Pro Life" and Anderson claimed to attend church four times a day. He was arrested numerous times in acts of political protest.

A reporter noted that Anderson was the sort of zealot who when greeted with, "Nice day, isn't it?" would reply, "There are no nice days for the butchered unborn." One article about Anderson in the Reno Gazette-Journal had a subtitle: "Some would call him committed. Others think he should be."

Anderson would frequently use the perception that he was crazy as a springboard:

I'm an individual that some of the pro-life people kind of hesitate to associate with because they don't want to be associated with that fanatic. And I don't really mean to be a fanatic in the bad sense of the word. But if something means something to you ... Life is worth living if you have a cause worth fighting and dying for. If life isn't worth defending with your own life, then nothing else is.

The Forbes/Anderson ticket actually made it to the ballot in Arkansas. They placed 7th out of 13 in that state with 0.11% of the vote. Shortly after the election Anderson moved to Savannah, Ga.

The campaign:

US Sen. Barry Goldwater running for President as a Republican in 1964 was a dream come true for many ultra Right-wing voters. The Republicans preempted the issues and policies for several conservative third parties leaving only the most extreme of the extremes as compared to other election years.

The Constitution Party was pretty far Right on the political spectrum, sure. You would think George Lincoln Rockwell running for President (without a VP candidate from what I can gather) under the American Nazi Party might have the distinction of being the most openly fascistic of the political parties in the 1964 campaign. But then there is the National States' Rights Party.

John Kasper, the Presidential nominee of the National States' Rights Party, was already well-known for hate speech and had served prison time for conspiracy in 1957. Kasper had been active in the 1956 "Ez for Prez" Ezra Pound campaign. According to the Constitution Kasper would have been too young to have taken office if he had been elected.

The VP nominee was Jesse Benjamin "J.B." Stoner Jr.-- KKK member, anti-Semite, racist, white supremacist, church bomber, terrorist, and early member of the NSRP.

An admirer of segregationist Theodore Bilbo, Stoner started his own local chapter of the KKK in Tennessee and created the Stoner Christian Anti-Jewish Party in the 1940s declaring that "being a Jew [should] be a crime punishable by death."

A suspect in many acts of Right-wing terrorism, Stoner was eventually convicted in 1980 for a 1958 church bombing attempt.

Authorities blamed Stoner for inciting a race riot in St. Augustine, Fla. during the campaign.

The NSRP ticket made the ballot in two states finishing with 0.33% of the vote in Kentucky and 0.53% in Arkansas.
