The campaign:
Charles E. Collins, variously described as a Georgia or Florida businessman, made his initial run for the Presidency in the Republican primaries. Running to the far Right of all the big names except for Pat Buchanan, he eventually broke ranks and went the independent route. For a time he was mentioned as a possible nominee for the US Taxpayers Party and the Reform Party. When he parted company with the Republicans he told the press, "Now I find the Republican National Party hierarchy has, like the Democrats before them, moved the party agenda to the left, leaving behind Americans who have become fed up with what is quickly becoming a one-party system."
His platform included: Buying back the Federal Reserve for $500 million -- Create debt-free, interest-free currency -- End tax on income, property, inheritance, and estates -- Abolish the IRS, CIA, ATF, US Dept. of Education, and FEMA -- "Constitutional taxes such as tariffs are all that run the government now, and are all that we need" -- Repeal NAFTA and GATT -- Rescind all Executive Orders -- Withdraw from the UN -- Remove US troops from Bosnia -- "Return to one nation under God" -- Create a national sales tax -- Oppose foreign relations with China, Vietnam, and Cuba -- Balance the budget in one year.
In July 1996 he was endorsed by CURE (Constitutionally Unified Republic for Everyone) a short-lived extreme Right wing group spearheaded by Evan Meacham, who had been impeached as Governor of Arizona in 1988. The group created a quasi-party called CURE Campaign 1996 in order to promote Collins.
Collins' running-mate was Rosemary Giumarra of Porterville, Calif. She did not seem to have a high profile role in the campaign.
The Collins/Giummara ticket made the ballot in five states with the following popular vote results: Colorado 0.19%, Mississippi 0.13%, Washington 0.11%, Arkansas 0.09%, and Tennessee 0.04%. They also had write-in votes recorded in an additional 10 states.
