The campaign:
Steve Adams and Bob Hargis were two Independent candidates for President in 2008. Both of them began their campaigns in 2006 and considered themselves social and fiscal conservatives.
Adams had changed his registration from Republican to Independent in Dec. 2006. He was software designer in Lexington, Ky. Hargis had paramedic experience and was a director of a large ambulance service in Ardmore, Okla.
Both of them started out with sincere webpages outlining their platforms and vision. It is remarkable how interchangeable their content could be, so it is a small wonder that in Apr. 2007 Adams and Hargis started a joint effort to boost independent candidates on a website called IndependentsTogether.us (http://www.independentstogether.us/) which appeared to be mostly a customized news aggregator. By October 2007 the two decided to run as a ticket with Adams as President and Hargis as VP.
On the Adams/Hargis webpage, the Presidential candidate outlined his first 100 days--
Meet with members of Congress personally to determine the best way to work together.
Balance the budget.
Secure Social Security.
Bring the troops home.
Secure the border.
Reduce our dependence on foreign oil and then oil completely.
He also provided a thumbnail list of his stand on the issues:
Abortion - Pro-life.
Affirmative Acton / Equal Opportunity - Best person get the job, period.
Balanced Budget / Deficit Spending / Taxes - Balance budget mandatory, FairTax national sales tax to replace income tax.
Capital Punishment - Support.
Education - Teach kids to learn, not to pass tests.
Electoral College - Eliminate as obsolete.
Energy / Environment - Alternative fuels and independence from foreign oil now.
Gerrymandering - Eliminate as illegal.
Gun Control - Reasonable gun control.
Immigration - Legal only.
Line Item Veto - Support, but never expect to get it.
Marriage - One man and one woman.
National Defense / War - Strong, but limited.
Separation of Church and State - Constitutional - no government religion.
Social Security - Part of the balanced budget.
Supreme Court Nominees - Originalists who interpret Constitution and do not create law.
Veterans - Highest respect and support.
The Adams/Hargis campaign examined their chances in mid-Oct. 2008 and Adams on his President Adams blog, made this final entry:

And then there were two...
Sadly my friends, the dream of a non-politician winning the White House will have to wait for another time. We have simply not gathered enough momentum to overcome the hurdles for ballot access or write-in access in any states.
This is still your country. Please vote your conscience. I cannot endorse either candidate, but I will vote because it is my right and privilege.
Thanks to all of our supporters, friends, and families for believing in us. Who knows what the future may hold?

Notes:
"First and foremost, I believe that a group of 5 skilled carpenters can be of 5 different faiths, have 5 different beliefs or philosophies and still build a strong house together. Unity to complete a goal can be assembled even in our diversity... Cooperation must extend beyond the 'hot' topics and we must be able to work together, even through our diversity. Simply put, we will not all agree, but we can work together to make this an UNDIVIDED country. I am not saying that social issues are not important, but Government should not be stifled due to disagreement over these issues, and the work must go on."--Bob W. Hargis.
