Michael Everett Reynolds, August 9, 1945 (Peewee Valley, Ky.) -
VP candidate for Independent (2008)
Running mate with nominee: Mel Moench (b. 1950)
Popular vote: 0 (0.00%)
Electoral vote: 0/538
The campaign:
Mel Moench of Buffalo, Minn. was a perennial candidate, usually for the Minnesota House of Representatives. He was an engineer with a special interest in renewable energy options. In fact, he had constructed an autonomous house with wind and solar power, as well as a composting toilet, but all without a permit. That last detail apparently landed him in jail for a bit. This all happened prior to the 2008 election.
Moench registered as a write-in candidate for US President in Minnesota only. His running-mate was listed as Michael Reynolds. I'll take a leap here and make a guess that this was famed New Mexico architect Michael E. Reynolds of earthship biotecture sustainable building renown. Like Moench, Reynolds had his own struggles with government regulations. I have yet to find a document confirming Moench's VP is the same Michael Reynolds, but that is where I am placing my bet.
A prolific author, in the 2008 election year Reynolds had published a book entitled Journey. He was also part of the televised series Stephen Fry in America (episode 5) that year.
Whether Reynolds knew he was on the ticket is another guess. In any case no votes were recorded for the ticket.
