The campaign:
Ernest L. Miller of Harrisonburg, Va. was a mix of anti-Communist fundamentalist Protestant Christian nationalist, organic food promoter, Biblical prophesizer, anti-vaxxer, libertarian, conspiracy theorist with a dash of proto-New Age pseudoscience thrown in. He published a periodical called The Truth Crusader with a claimed circulation of 8700 at the time he ran for President. In 1976 he used the publication to encourage "all dedicated, informed, Christian patriots to immediately withdraw from the two communist controlled major political parties."
In 1974 Miller said he was visited by a vision of Jesus who told him to run for President not because he would win but rather as someone to spread The Word. He would run as "God's Independent, Nondenominational, Nonparty Candidate for President of the United States."
Miller, who would have been 78 on Inauguration Day had he been elected, created the Restoration Party and began campaigning long before many of the other candidates. It seems he had two running mates covering different states-- Frank W. Gaydosh and Col. Roy N. Eddy.
Roy N. Eddy, a retired Army colonel, lived in either Orlando, Fla. or in North Carolina, depending on the news source. Although historical works list Col. Eddy as Miller's running mate in Tennessee, I have yet to locate any primary source that mentions him in that role. For some reason Eddy's name was not on the ballot in that state even though most of the other parties had Vice-Presidential candidates listed.
Miller/Eddy were registered write-ins for California. Oddly, Frank Gaydosh was an official write-in candidate for US President in California, finding himself running against, among many others, the Restoration Party write-in ticket of Ernest L. Miller and Roy N. Eddy.
Miller was a registered write-in in Florida but I have not found any mention of a running mate in that state for the Restoration Party.
Information on Col. Eddy is scarce, but a Restoration Party campaign brochure did include this:
Vice-Presidential candidate Col. Roy N. Eddy has taken dozens of advanced courses in law, logic, conventional and nuclear weaponry, officer courses, transportation courses, and military Government courses in the best Military Schools an Universities. He has taught many basic, technical courses. He has served an an Administration Officer, Post Auditor, Fuel Conservation Officer, Provost Marshall, Trial Judge Advocate, Batallian Executive Officer, District Rail Transportation Officer, Special Courts Investigation Officer, Organizer of New Operations and Trouble Shooter, Military Government Official in Germany and Troop Transport Commander.
Col. Eddy was miraculously delivered from death many times by the hand of the Almighty. He has been Divinely-preserved and Divinely-called for this great national emergency.
On the ballot in Tennessee they earned 316 votes. An additional 26 votes were given to them as a write-in ticket in California.
